  • Monitoring of the effective size of the electrode in EDM
    Valentinčič, Joško ; Junkar, Mihael
There exists an optimal discharge energy according to the size of eroded surface which effects process effectiveness especially during rough EDM machining. In general the active size of the electrode ... surface changes during machining process according to the shape of the workpiece. The optimal discharge energy should be used for each size of eroded surface which occurs in the interface of erosion. In our research the interrelations between the discharge energy and the size of eroding surface were investigated by electric current signal in the gap, which represents discharges in the gap. The discharges were evaluated by one of a non-parametric modeler: a conditional average estimator. The results show that the ratio between the applied discharge energy and the eroded surface can be significantly detected by the applied method, which is promising for online control of EDM.
