  • Predictability of seasonal to interannual rainfall variability in Malawi
    Nkhokwe, Jolamu L.
Using data since 1957 relationship between summer rainfall over Malawi with Malawi winter rainfall, Quasi-biennial Oscillation (QBO), Souther Oscillation (SO) Ethiopian/Eritrian rainfall is ... investigated. The seasonal spatial and temporal variability in the relationships are presented. Winter rainfall correlates significantly with summer rainfall over the south of the country. QBO at both 30 and 50 hPa levels correlated significantly with rainfall over the north and lakeshore areas. Over the extreme north the correlations change signs during the other half of the summer season. Ethiopian rainfall correlates significantly with rainfall over most areas of the country. SO correlates significantly with rainfall in most areas of the country. Prediction schemes have been developed for a few selected stations and presented. Verification has shown that the schemes, are quite good in predicting the summer rainfall in Malawi. Significant lead time between the predictors and the summer rainfall has also been revealed
