  • English figurative expressions originating in Greek culture and their Slovene equivalents [Elektronski vir] = Angleški figurativni izrazi, ki izvirajo iz grške kulture, in njihove slovenske ustreznice : diplomsko delo

Figurative language is present in our everyday conversations, used when we want to enrich our language with vivid images, expressed through conventionalised figurative expressions such as idioms, ... restricted habitual collocations, and proverbs. Every language has its own unique lexicon of non-literal, idiomatic multiword expressions, which reflects the cultural and historical background of its language community. Although different cultures generate different perceptions of the world, and with it, produce figurative expressions which cannot be easily understood by members outside the given language community, there are also numerous idiomatic expressions that are common to many modern European languages. Such idiomatic expressions are referred to as widespread idioms. One of the main reasons for their existence is the common linguistic heritage of most European languages and their main sources include idiomatic expressions originating in Latin and Greek languages, and their respective cultures. The purpose of this thesis is to confirm the existence of widespread idioms with the use of a database of English idiomatic expressions originating in Greek culture and their Slovene equivalents. The theoretical part of the thesis serves as the theoretical base for establishing the criteria by which the expressions used in the database were selected and the practical part consists of the database and its analysis.
