    Literary translation has to be one the more difficult tasks a translator can face. In addition to having to be professionally qualified and having a good sense of the language as well as being able ... to adequately transfer the text into the target culture, a translator doing a literary translation also faces the question how to remain faithful to the author's style. The translator has to be very familiar with the target language and the language of the original text to be able to create a high-quality translation for the reader. In my thesis Analiza prevodov kratkih zgodb iz antologije Golo mesto (An Analysis of the Translation of Short Stories from the Anthology Golo mesto) I have presented translation from two related languages. I have included translations of stories by Dušan Čater, Đurđa Strsoglavec and Maja Brodschneider Kotnik, which were published in 2005 in the Golo mesto anthology of Croatian short stories. The anthology represents texts by Croatian authors who emerged and became established in the 1980s and 1990s, in a period when Croatian literature was characterised by the experience of a short story. My thesis consists of my theoretical work and analyses of translations. In my theoretical work, I present the definitions of a translation, translator and translation from the perspective of various authors' thoughts and concepts. Then I continue with a brief description of the basic characteristics of literary translation and present the anthology, the authors and translators of the short stories. In the conclusion of my diploma thesis, with the help of a typology of the most common mistakes in translating from the Croatian to the Slovenian language, I present the most common mistakes that occur in the translations. Translation requires a well-founded knowledge of source and target culture as well as both languages. A lack of knowledge can only lead to errors in the translation. The Croatian and Slovenian language are related languages, which leads many to believe it is much simpler to translate between them. However, this is not the case. Small cultural differences and linguistic details can easily mislead translators. Translations must be able to recognise those differences that are not visible at first glance. Poor 296 translations negatively affect the author's original work, the original culture and literature.
