The thesis investigates the literary worlds of Raymond Carver's and Judith Hermann's debut collections of short stories, Will You Please Be Quiet, Please? (1976) and Sommerhaus, später (1998). ... Carver's and Hermann's short stories display a unique way of capturing the zeitgeist of the disillusioned working and lower middle class in the 1960s and 70s in America, and of young artists aimlessly drifting in Berlin at the end of the 1990s, respectively. The focus is on the analysis and interpretation of Carver's and Hermann's short stories with the aim of highlighting the similarities in and exposing the differences between the authors' works. The research is based on the American and German literary traditions and settings, with a specific emphasis on the short story theory and the Kurzgeschichte theory. Particular attention is given to the exploration of the aesthetics of the short story genre, specifically, to literary minimalism. A relatively unusual approach to Carver's and Hermann's short stories is taken when an analogy between photography and the short story is established, through which a new perspective on the authors' short stories is revealed.
