    A large corpus of poetry written by the English poet, novelist, and mythographer Robert Graves is centred around the idea of the so-called White Goddess, the divinity venerated in the supposedly ... matriarchal prehistoric era. The singular poetics that guided Graves's work is presented in his book-length essay entitled The White Goddess: A Historical Grammar of Poetic Myth. The author also compiled a compendium entitled The Greek Myths, in which he interprets Greek mythology against the backdrop of prehistoric matriarchy and the transition to patriarchy. The novel Cassandra by the German writer Christa Wolf is a retelling of the myth of the Trojan War. It draws on the version of the story found in Robert Graves's The Greek Myths, where Troy is presented as a society transitioning from matriarchy to patriarchy. In their works Robert Graves and Christa Wolf examine the values and ambitions that drive our civilization and that often prove to be destructive and self-destructive. They pose the question to what degree this is due to the fact that our society is patriarchal. This leads to a reflection on the essence of the sexes, on whether and how they differ from each other in their values and in their psychological constitutions. The contrasting of patriarchy with an imagined matriarchy provides a frame for these considerations. The thesis examines and compares the answers that the two authors and their works provide to the questions presented.
