The diploma thesis deals with fantasy literature and its recurring - archetypal characters and patterns. After a brief introduction of fantasy genre and its subgenres, th*e work presents the set of ...most common archetypal characters and dualistic patterns that typically appear in the genre as a basis for comparison in the practical part of the thesis. The diploma thesis also introduces the so-called theory of the Hero's Journey and its individual stages. The second part of the thesis presents the analysis of the fantasy novel Wizard's First Rule. A brief plot summary is followed by a study analysis of the individual characters, their archetypal role in the hero's story, while special focus is placed on any potential deviation from the traditional portrayal of each individual archetype. The next section tries to identify the individual stages of the main hero's journey. The conclusion summarises the main findings of the analysis, showing that while the story adheres to the homogenising pattern of the hero's journey, it does not present a completely archetypical hero story so characteristic of the Western patriarchal society. The author tries to subvert many archetypal dualisms, primarily the binary opposition of good/evil and reason/emotion, but he does not attempt to do away with them. The story introduces a male hero who combines strength and determination with love and compassion, two traits uncommon for archetypal heroes, and it presents its female protagonist as the most powerful character in the novel.
