  • Female characters in Ernest Hemingway's works = Ženski liki v delih Ernesta Hemingwaya : diplomsko delo

    Ernest Hemingway, the prominent writer of the "Lost Generation", has been known for portraying female characters in his works as submissive or dominant according to the extent to which they ... complicate male protagonists' lives. These characters can be compared with the role women had in his personal life. In my diploma thesis I concentrated on the leading female characters in six of his works and divided them into two groups based on whether they were submissive or dominant. In the first part, I presented the historical and literary background, Hemingway's biography, and autobiographical elements in the six works along with their summaries. In the second part, I analysed the six female characters in terms of good and bad characteristics in relation to the male characters, based on the critics' standpoints and my own point of view. I concluded the thesis proving that the submissive females can be identified as good and the dominant ones as bad.
