  • Prevajanje lastnih imen v antologiji pravljic Svetlane Makarovič [Elektronski vir] : diplomsko delo
    Budkovič, Neža
This thesis focuses on the translation of proper names in the Slovene-English anthology Svetlana's Fairytales (Svetlanine pravljice), written by Svetlana Makarovič, one of the most well-known authors ... of adult and children's books in Slovenia. Translators of children's literature are faced with numerous challenges, one of which is proper names - not only because they are culturally specific but also because of their particular characteristics. Like other cultural or textual elements, names in children's literature serve particular purposes or functions. Their first function is to identify the characters; however, they can also have a number of other functions, e.g. amusing the reader, imparting knowledge or evoking emotions. In general, they tend to enrich the text with particular connotations and their meaning is relevant to the narrative process. They usually have to be translated or adapted to the target culture, so that the target audience can access their semantic content. When dealing with the translation of names a translator may adopt different strategies, and his or her choice is bound to have an impact on the way in which the name functions in the text. Svetlana Makarovič is known for her distinctive writing style, full of imagination and creativity, and the names in her books are very original and inventive. The purpose of this thesis is to establish whether the English translations preserve the original meaning of the names in the anthology, and which translation strategies were applied. The theoretical part of the thesis includes an introduction to the author, her work and the anthology, followed by some basic information about translators and their work. It also summarizes definitions of children's literature from different sources, and provides an overview of the most common challenges translators face when working with it. The next part is dedicated to proper names - their definitions in various English and Slovene sources, their characteristics in the book, the strategies proposed by different translators around the world, and those applied in the English translations of the fairytales. The second part of the thesis offers a more detailed analysis of the names and their translations, with comments on their meaning, and classifies the translation strategies into different categories according to Gregor Perko's model: non-translation, and translation based on etymology, connotations or word play.
