Since professional translators tend to be constantly under pressure due to market and client demands, they must be able to work independently, often relying only on their mental lexicon to solve ... linguistic dilemmas. Just how capable they actually are, once they acquire their professional qualifications, is a question to which this diploma thesis is trying to provide an answer. The main part of this thesis contains a theoretical presentation of the concept of an individual's mental lexicon, and an analysis of results of a translation test that involved students at the Department of Translation at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Arts. Students were put in three different groups according to their respective study levels (BA1 - first year of undergraduate studies, BA3 - third year undergraduate studies, and MA1 - first year of the master's programme). They were presented with a list of 30 adjectives in Slovene with various frequencies of use and they were given the task of translating them into English, and also provide synonyms for each of the translations. The purpose of this task, which was carried out using the Translog-II interface that enables logging of keyboard activity, was to find out whether the students are able to work independently, without the use of dictionaries and other sources, and how fast and accurate they are. The results of all three groups of students were then compared in order to determine the level of progress in terms of speed and accuracy for each individual group. It was initially expected that the students would exhibit an effectiveness level corresponding to their level of studies, and that their colleagues specializing in interpreting would generally produce better results. The analysis, however, revealed that interpreters were merely faster at completing the task, while they were not better than translators in terms of the number of correct translations they provided. Results also revealed that on average the group MA1 was capable of providing 4.5 more correct translations than the group BA1. Another surprising discovery following the analysis was the fact that many students in all three groups were unable to correctly spell certain adjectives when translating into English ("possesive", "cristal"). Following a detailed representation of the results of the test, given in tables, the conclusion provides an assessment of effectiveness for all three groups of students, which, according to the results, increases each year in terms of vocabulary, yet decreases in terms of speed.
