    Background: the origins of International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps (ICIDH) stem from changes in morbidity of population in developed countries, with predominance of ... chronic conditions and their consequences. It was published in 1980 by World Health Organization (WHO) for its trial use as a manual to assist study of the consequences of diseases. Explained are: the conceptual scheme, consequences of disease: impairment (on the level of organs), disability (on the level of individual's activity), functional limitation (on the level of performance of activity), handicap (on the level of interaction individual-social and cultural environment). It is intended to stress some goals of its use and a short review about experiences with application in different fields, including some proposals and instruments developed from it. Conclusions: There has been a successful and widespread use of its application in years after publication. In february 1993 was published reprint and from that moment on started the process of its revision. The slovene translation is forthcoming, initiated and conducted by Rehabilitation Institute. Essential proposals for better understanding of its use are racapitulated.
