    More intriguing than the images of the otherness themselves is they way how they are generated. The foreignness and the space underlie the images of the otherness and the following doctoral ... dissertation examines their narrative possibilities in Herberstein's Moscovia and Olearius's Vermehrte Newe Beschreibung der Muscowitischen vnd Persischen Reyse. The "foreign" is spatially defined as someone or something outside of some specific order, to which it paradoxically belongs. The interplay between the "foreign" and the "known" is based on the Deleuze's concept of the fold, which regulates the spatially funded relation between the outside (foreign) and the inside (someone or something familiar, known, close), meaning that these two categories and consequently the images of the otherness are fluid and interchangeable. Applying Koselleck's asymmetrical pairs like "Christian" - "pagan" or "the civilized" - "the barbarian" to both travel accounts reveals the semantically packed relation between Herberstein and Olearius as ambassadors of the European "inside" and their "outside" (Russians, Tartars, northern peoples etc.). Nevertheless by changing the narrative perspective and adding more aspects - be it on political, religious, cultural or other basis - the travel accounts produce even more folds, creating a more complex and open pattern between the otherwise rigid binary oppositions of the "foreign" (outside) and the "known/familiar" (inside).
