  • Magnetically detected intracellular current in single cell of the green algae Chara corrallina
    Jazbinšek, Vojko ...
The magnetic field measurement in the vicinity of the excited plant cell, the single internodal cell of the pond water green algae Chara corallina, gives us the direct information of the ... intracellular current in this plant. These large single cells have been a subject of several electrophysiological studies where the mechanism of action potential was characterised. The electrophysiological properties of some single plant cells show a similarity to the electrophysiological properties of some excitable single cells in animals and humans. However, there are also remarkable differences, like much longer duration of the action potential and lower excitation propagation speed. Also the transfer of information, i.e. the propagation of excitation between neighbouring cells seems not to require the intercellular couplimg with low resistance, but it may go via the "jumping transmission" with the travelling electric field as it was recently proposed for the Chara corallina cells. Here we report on the first measurement and the analysis of the magnetic field distribution in the plane above the internodal single cell of Chara corallina.
