Assessment of geomorphic change in a steep torrential channel due to flash floodBezak, Nejc, hidrologija ...Hydrological extremes such as flash floods can cause large economic loss and even endanger human lives. Small, step and forested torrential catchment named Kuzlovec (~ 0.7 km2), a part of the Sava ... River basin, is located west of the capital city Ljubljana and is one of the experimental catchments in Slovenia. Flash flood event occurred in the investigated area in August 2014. The flash flood was triggered by extreme meteorological conditions. Three tipping bucket rain gauges measured from 110 to 140 mm of rainfall in less than 10 hours, which corresponds to the estimated return period from 100 to 250 years where the Gumbel distribution was used to construct the intensity-duration-frequency relationship. Furthermore, maximum one minute rainfall intensities measured with disdrometer exceeded 200 mm/h. Geomorphic change detection due to the flash flood was performed using two digital terrain model (DTM) grids with a horizontal resolution of 5 cm, which were constructed using the Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS). Two TLS episodes were performed one before (April 2013) and one after (August 2014) the flash flood. The DTM of difference approach was used to estimate the sediment budget in the investigated area. A mean difference in the elevation between the DTM after flash flood and DTM before flash flood was -0.104 m for a smaller section (about 160 m long and 25 m wide) with a mean slope of 37°.
