  • Recasting educational debates about female citizenship, agency and identity
    Dillabough, Jo-Anne ; Arnot, Madeleine
This article reviews feminist critiques of liberal democracy and explores its implications for the study of female agency, identity and citizenship in education. It is largely concerned with ... unsettling liberal notions of political selfhood and addressing feminist educational debates about female citizenship. In so doing, the article attempts to respond to calls from education feminists for an adequate critique of the liberal democratic education project which addresses larger concerns about female agency as they are currently manifested in education cross-nationally. The first section draws upon the work of feminist political theorists such as Nancy Fraser, Allison Weir, and Iris Marion Young to identify three critical approaches to study of female agency . The second section uses the empirical and theoretical contributions to the edited collection Challenging Democracy to identify the various ways in which notions of female agency and citizenship have been struggled over in education.
