  • Language, education and citizenship in the post-national era : notes from the front

    The purpose of this paper will be first to describe ways in which the nationalist ideologies of francophone Canada were implemented in and through education in Quebec and the rest of Canada in the ... last forty years. I will then discuss challenges posed by diversity to this process, and some of the ways in which the French-language school systems have responded to this challenge. I will focus on particular issues related to student recruitment, evaluation of linguistic proficiency, construction of linguistic norms and conventions of language practice, access to multilingualism, and links between language and cultural or political identity.
