  • Fracture toughness of weld joint made under dry atmosphere deep bellow sea level
    Rak, Inoslav
The CTOD toughness evaluation of repaired weld joints, where the presence of two weld deposits, complex mechanical heterogeneity and high residual stress is an unavoidable fact, requires some ... modifications of commonly used specimen geometry and testing procedure. This paper presents the results of single edge bend specimens (SENB) with shallow (a/W=0.16)and deep notches (a/W=0.3-0.5) extracted from 20 mm thick multipass submerged arc welded (SAW) joints which were repaired with the dry hyperbaric welding process at the toe region of the original SAW weld deposits. The repaired single bevel-joint on 20 mm thick HSLA steel produced high toughness. The directly measured CTOD values are consistent with the calculated CTOD B 7448 Part 2 values. The constraint effect as a function of the a/W ratio and of weld metal overmatching on the surface cracked SENB specimen values was observed.
