  • The piecewise trend functions
    Tominc, Polona
Using the methodology described it is possible to estimate the regression parameters of different functions (linear, polynomials), which are combined into the picewise trend function and which is not ... necessary the spline function. There are many cases in which a sample can be divided into two or more partitions in which some or all of the regression parameters may differ. In this paper the regression piecewise trend model, with a priori known switches is applied to the Slovenian car market from 1964 to 1996. The regression parameters' estimates of the piecewise trend function are obtained by the least squares and the least absolute value methods. There are many cases where the least absolute value estimates have smaller standard errors than the least squares estimates of the regression parameters and the piecewise trend functions is often among them.
