In lexicological treatments of metonymy the syntagmatic criterion is generally cited as constitutive for metonymic transfers of meaning. Individual scholars (A. Vidovic Muha, A. Birix, E. L. Ginzburg, J. D. Apresjan) focus on different planes on which this criterion is realized in the metonymy. In typologizing metonymic meanings of nouns, the focus is on changes in the structure of semantic components & on the agreement of the metonymic semantic relations with the relations between proposition components.
