    Screening for cervical cancer is not a component of health care in rural India. This article reports on a trial of cervical-cancer screening by human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, cytologic analysis, or visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid in rural villages. The results, as compared with those in a group that received no screening, showed that a single round of HPV testing significantly reduced the incidence of invasive cervical cancer and mortality in rural Indian villages. A trial in rural Indian villages of cervical-cancer screening by human papillomavirus (HPV) testing, cytologic analysis, or visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid showed that a single round of HPV testing significantly reduced the incidence of invasive cervical cancer and mortality. In developing countries, there is a lack of effective screening programs for cervical cancer.
