Después de la conquista del imperio azteca, la región al noreste de la Nueva España quedó en manos de varias tribus indígenas hasta que su colonización pudo comenzar gracias a una capitulación otorgada por Felipe II a Luis de Carvajal de la Cueva. Aunque Carvajal obtuvo el permiso del Rey para descubrir, pacificar y poblar tal territorio, no tenía el capital necesario para iniciar la empresa. En la primera parte de este artículo, con base en documentos originales, considero a aquellos individuos que pudieron haber proporcionado los fondos necesarios. Aunque los documentos hasta ahora encontrados no lo dicen claramente, creo que Miguel Núñez--suegro de Carvajal--contribuyó con la mayor parte del costo inicial. En la segunda parte, presento una breve biografía de Núñez, cuya interesante vida incluyó cuatro años en la cárcel de la Inquisición, y transcurrió entre Portugal, España, Marruecos y varias partes del Nuevo Mundo, particularmente en la isla La Española. Palabras clave: INQUISICIÓN LUIS DE CARVAJAL NUEVA ESPAÑA TRÁFICO DE ESCLAVOS SANTO DOMINGO After the conquest of the Aztec empire, the region to the northeast of New Spain remained in the hands of several indigenous tribes until Philip II granted Luis de Carvajal de la Cueva permission to begin the colonization of that region. Although Carvajal was now allowed to discover, pacify and colonize that territory, he did not have the necessary money to start the enterprise. In the first part of this article, I will consider, based on archival documents, who could have provided the funds. Although the documents found so far do not clearly show it, I believe that it was Miguel Núñez, Carvajal's father-in-law, who contributed the largest part of the initial cost. The second part presents a brief biography of Núñez, whose interesting life included four years in the jails of the Inquisition, and was spent in Portugal, Spain, Morocco as well as in other parts of the New World, particularly in the island Hispaniola.
