The framework for the issue discussed in the article is provided by the works by Vladimir Ya. Propp. He described the living conditions in societies dependent on natural forces, where the main means of controlling the natural environment were magic. The same conditions influenced the character of rule in such societies. It can be assumed that individual zupas were basic political units of the early Slavic world. In the fractal sense, each zupa is a true pars pro toto of the Slavs as a whole. The illustrative example of the early Slavic zupa Bled (in north-western Slovenia) is discussed in the article. The author also discusses the character of Slavic principalities that existed in the East Alpine Region in the early Middle Ages, that are Liburnia, Carantania, Carniola, and Dudlebian principality.
