    Journal Article

Badger explores the works of an Austrian exile poet Erich Fried, who had become renowned as a fierce and unrelenting social and political critic. In a career spanning some fifty years, Fried's criticism remained fuelled by the same essential desire for "Weltverbesserung" and "der Menschheit irgendwie zu helfen," which he expressed in early unpublished writings entitled simply, 11.III-3.VIII 1938 in Wien. Poems from the final decade of Fried's life emphasize the gulf between abstract and conrete utopia, criticizing a scalar dreaming which "nicht mehr Erfullung sucht." Fried is clearly promoting a vectorial dreaming which in keeping with his desire for world-improvement, involves a movement towards a concrete utopia.
