One reason for the neglect of Georges Rouault (1871-1958) is that his pictures can appear, at first sight, impenetrably obscure. His palette is rich and dark, and his figures are shrouded in heavy, black outlines as in stained glass. A show of his early work is at London's Royal Academy until June 6.
