A thermodynamical phenomenological approach to complex fluids is presented in which the underlying microstructure is accounted for through a so-called internal variable of state. The latter may diffuse. It is shown that both the bulk evolution–diffusion equation of this variable and the required associated boundary conditions can be deduced from a thermodynamical reasoning that exploits the second law in the bulk and at the boundary considered as an interface.
