Buterna himself is as puzzling as the villagers. After all, he is an intellectual who has lived in the city all these years, yet he seems to be stuck in another age. His attitude and response to sexuality is that of a first communicant who is afraid of sinning. Florian Lipus is telling the reader that the church can warp the mind and the body forever. No last joyous celebration of eroticism here. The union between Franz and Helena is spectacular, yet wrought with unease and guilt for Franz.
