Vatroslav Jagic's assessment of Franc Miklosic's & Izmail I. Sreznevsky's accomplishments in Slavic linguistics, as expressed in his Spomeni mojega zivota, 2 (Memoirs, Part 2 1934) & Istoriya slavyanskoy filologii (The History of Slavic Philology 1910), is discussed. Jagic seems to underestimate the importance of Sreznevsky's contribution, in particular the significance of his materials compiled for an Old Russian dictionary. On the other hand, Jagic admires Miklosic's talent, intellectual energy, methodical nature, & diligence; weighing his enormous opus, he cannot decide whether Miklosic was a greater comparative grammarian or comparative lexicographer & lexicologist. Jacic's critique of Miklosic's Etimoloski slovar slovanskih jezikov (Etymological Dictionary of Slavic Languages 1886) seems to be motivated by personal, competitive reasons.
