Elektropećna troska može se koristiti kao učinkovit poboljšivač tla.- The slag used in this research is a byproduct of unalloyed carbon steel making process in electric arc furnace. Chemical composition of the steel slag show relatively high content of certain macro- and microelements and the low content of toxic metals. Metals within slag are released gradually and thus do not pose a threat to the environment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of steel slag on growth and physiological processes of bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) and to compare the efficiency of steel slag to that of the artificial fertilizer. For the purpose, greenhouse and field experiments were conducted during several seasons. Steel slag increased growth, content of essential minerals in the substrate and bean plants as well as photosynthetic rate. Based on oxidative stress parameters, potential phytotoxicity of steel slag was not determined. The obtained results show that steel slag is a very good and inexpensive source of nutrients essential to plants, equally efficient or even better than artificial fertilizer. The steel slag can be used as an excellent soil amendment.- All metadata published by Europeana are available free of restriction under the Creative Commons CC0 1.0 Universal Public Domain Dedication.
