Automatic total stations are the most developed classical surveying instruments at the moment. Automatic total stations significantly reduce the work of an operator. In some cases measurements can be carried out without the presence of an operator, because the station is completely automated. Paper describes the tachymeter and its development. The motives and technical bases for the development of higher degrees of automation of total stations and general characteristics of automatic systems of total stations are described.
