May 13--WASHINGTON -- Lawmakers expressed renewed outrage at abuses in Abu Ghraib prison on Wednesday after privately viewing new pictures and videos of Iraqi detainees being forced to perform sex acts and being beaten by American soldiers. The photographic evidence shed little light on how much U.S. military commanders knew about and directed the mistreatment of prisoners, senators and representatives said. And, a day after an Al Qaeda-affiliated cell cited abuse of Iraqi prisoners as justification for its beheading of an American civilian, political leaders were divided over whether the sensational images should be released to the public. Another photo appeared to show a U.S. soldier beating an Iraqi prisoner with a cane. The soldier is captured with a cane in the air over the prisoner, who has welts on his body, said a congressional source.
