  • Measurement of bridge dynamics with a bridge weigh-in-motion system
Žnidarič, Aleš ; Lavrič, Igor, 1972- ; Kalin, Jan
Dynamic modelling of bridges in the past has shown that dynamic amplificationsof traffic loading due to the passing heavy vehicles are generally lower than those prescribed in differ-ent codes and ... standards. The most rigorous reductions were shown for the heaviest loading events, which occur due to several heavy vehicles on the bridge. Applying such over-conservative Dynamic Amplification Factor (DAF) is beneficial for the design of a bridge, as it may provide additional structural safety needed in the future to withstand higher loads and reduced carrying capacity due to deterioration or any other reason. However, using such con-servative DAF estimates in the bridge assessment stage may result in unrealistically high loadings and, consequently, unnecessary measures that the bridge is submitted to. Paper de-scribes the improved functionality of the bridge weigh-in-motion system to measure in real-time the individual DAF of all traffic loading events on the bridge, the measuring set-up, and the results obtained.
