Introduction of the silvopastoral system and some of its results in Slovenia

The article deals with silvopastural systems and their advantages and disadvantages. In recent decades in Slovenia, many abandoned pastures and meadows have been overgorwn by forest and shrubbery ...because of de-agrarization and depopulation of rural land. The main cause of the abandonment of agricultural land use was and is insufficient yield. The return on such land can be raised by the introduction of a silvopastoral system that provides grass, timber and not infrequently fruit production. The introduction of a silvopastoral system would be very suitable on vulnerable sites where crop-tress, which are an important component of the silvopastoral system, protect the soil against erosion and mitigate unfavourable climatic conditions. The article presents the first results achieved in some trials with silvopastural system in Slovenia.
