A detective story or not? An analysis of elements of the detective genre in The curious incident of the dog in the night-time = Analiza elementov detektivskega žanra v romanu The curious incident of the dogin the night-time : diplomsko delo

The thesis discusses elements of detective genre in Mark Haddonʼs The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. It argues that the book is a detective novel, despite many other influences and ...elements that do not belong to the detective genre. In the theoretical part, the thesis researches the origins and history of detective genre, from the elements of the detective genre in the Bible and Edgar Allan Poe, the first author of the genre, to the golden age of detective fiction. Theoretical part also researches recurring elements that define the detective genre - the stereotypical character roles, plot, narrator, style of writing and other key elements. This theoretical knowledge of the genre is then applied to the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. Detective elements of the novel are explored, focusing on the plot (murder, solving of the crime, the solution) and the character roles of adetective novel (detective, murderer, victim, falsely accused etc.).
