    Heavy cognitive load in simultaneous interpreting (SI) forces interpreters to use various strategies that relieve the burden and ease the task. The paper will present examples of use of various ... strategies used by students of MA Interpreting course at the Department of Translation, Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. The examples are taken from the interpretations of six speeches from French into Slovenian, which were transcribed and analysed in terms of the use of strategies and form part of a wider study on the characteristics of language in SI. The aim of the paper is to illustrate the claim that throughout the MA course students develop sufficient interpreting skills and competence to prepare them for professional work on the market. By learning some basic theoretical grounds and by following well-structured exercises with targeted feedback, the progress in interpreting competence acquisition is faster, setting a firm foundation for competent professional work.
