    Sickles (189) originating from 11 Late Bronze Age boards discovered in Slovenia and dated to the Periods Br D (13 cent, BC) and Ha A (12-11 cent BC) have been investigated by inductively coupled ... plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES), optical microscopy and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). The lower concentration of tin in sickles (3-4%) compared to axes (6-7%), is thought to be a consequence of deliberate alloying by early smiths to obtain a malleable bronze for sickles which needed to be repeatedly hammered to maintain a useful cutting edge. The concentrations and the relative ratios for four impurities (As, Sb, Ni, Co) show that the majority of sickles belong to two groups with the same type of bronze with dominant arsenic, suggesting that the same raw material had been used in their prodution. Microstructural analysis of these sickles suggest that primary cooper ore was used for their production. Surface analysis and the eutectic (▫$\alpha + Cu_2S$▫ distribution show that the sickles were cast in a sand mould in an upright position. The results of this study suggest a high level of metallurgical knowledge in the Ha A period in the south-eastern Alpine region.
