  • English in the classroom
    Kukovec, Melita
This article aims to present one of the problems in the use of English which we encounter in our work, particularly when we assess our students' lessons in primary and secondary schools. Those ... problems are revealed at two levels, first in their general linguistic competence and, secondly, in the language they use in the classroom every day - classroom English - which can also be perceived as a kind of English for a specific purpose. This paper focuses particularly on the language used orally when giving instructions for the learners' work. Most common student mistakes are classified according to the categories of origin, as we notice certain patterns in the incorrect use of indirect questions, conditional clauses, word order, agreement, prepositions, etc. Concrete examples have so far proven to be most effective in the elimination of irregularities. Our students, future teachers of English, are expected to be models of competent use of grammatically correct language. Unfortunately, some of them have far too many problems with grammatical accuracy, and it is therefore imperative to investigate the reasons for this phenomenon in order to avoid similar problems in the future. This issue is extremely relevant at a time when we are in the process of changing our study programmes and seeking new techniques and content, particularly in the subject of Language Development courses. A survey was therefore carried out among our 3rd and 4th year students, who filled in a questionnaire in which their views on their grammatical competence in English were expressed, the reasons for their satisfaction or lack of it were listed, and some possibilities for its improvement were suggested. It is hoped that the results of this study will shed some light on the problem and lead to improvement in the linguistic competence of our students.
