We resolve the kinematic distance ambiguity for 266 inner Galaxy H II regions out of a sample of 291 using existing H I and 13CO sky surveys. Our sample contains all H II regions with measured radio ...recombination line emission over the extent of the 13CO Boston University-Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory Galactic Ring Survey (18° < l < 55° and |b| < 1) and contains ultra compact (UC), compact, and diffuse H II regions. We use two methods for resolving the distance ambiguity for each H II region: H I emission/absorption (H I E/A) and H I self-absorption (H I SA). We find that the H I E/A and H I SA methods can resolve the distance ambiguity for 72% and 87% of our sample, respectively. When projected onto the Galactic plane, this large sample appears to reveal aspects of Galactic structure, with spiral arm-like features at Galactocentric radii of 4.5 and 6 kpc, and a lack of H II regions within 3.5 kpc of the Galactic center. Our H II regions are approximately in the ratio of 2 to 1 for far versus near distances. The ratio of far-to-near distances for UC H II regions is 2.2 to 1. Compact H II regions are preferentially at the near distance; their ratio of far-to-near distances is 1.6 to 1. Diffuse H II regions are preferentially at the far distance; their ratio of far-to-near distances is 3.8 to 1. This implies that the distinction between UC and compact H II regions is largely due to distance, and that the large angular size of diffuse H II regions is not solely due to proximity to the Sun.
FEEDBACK is a SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) legacy program dedicated to study the interaction of massive stars with their environment. It performs a survey of 11 galactic ...high mass star-forming regions in the 158 m (1.9 THz) line of C ii and the 63 m (4.7 THz) line of O i. We employ the 14 pixel Low Frequency Array and 7 pixel High Frequency Array upGREAT heterodyne instrument to spectrally resolve (0.24 MHz) these far-infrared fine structure lines. With a total observing time of 96h, we will cover ∼6700 arcmin2 at 14 1) angular resolution for the C ii line and 6 3 for the O i line. The observations started in spring 2019 (Cycle 7). Our aim is to understand the dynamics in regions dominated by different feedback processes from massive stars such as stellar winds, thermal expansion, and radiation pressure, and to quantify the mechanical energy injection and radiative heating efficiency. This is an important science topic because feedback of massive stars on their environment regulates the physical conditions and sets the emission characteristics in the interstellar medium (ISM), influences the star formation activity through molecular cloud dissolution and compression processes, and drives the evolution of the ISM in galaxies. The C ii line provides the kinematics of the gas and is one of the dominant cooling lines of gas for low to moderate densities and UV fields. The O i line traces warm and high-density gas, excited in photodissociations regions with a strong UV field or by shocks. The source sample spans a broad range in stellar characteristics from single OB stars, to small groups of O stars, to rich young stellar clusters, to ministarburst complexes. It contains well-known targets such as Aquila, the Cygnus X region, M16, M17, NGC7538, NGC6334, Vela, and W43 as well as a selection of H ii region bubbles, namely RCW49, RCW79, and RCW120. These C ii maps, together with the less explored O i 63 m line, provide an outstanding database for the community. They will be made publically available and will trigger further studies and follow-up observations.
Context. The origin and life-cycle of molecular clouds are still poorly constrained, despite their importance for understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. Many large-scale surveys of ...the Galactic plane have been conducted recently, allowing for rapid progress in this field. Nevertheless, a sub-arcminute resolution global view of the large-scale distribution of molecular gas, from the diffuse medium to dense clouds and clumps, and of their relationshipto the spiral structure, is still missing. Aims. We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous, spectroscopic survey of the inner Galactic plane, in order to complement the many continuum Galactic surveys available with crucial distance and gas-kinematic information. Our aim is to combine this data set with recent infrared to sub-millimetre surveys at similar angular resolutions. Methods. The SEDIGISM survey covers 78 deg2 of the inner Galaxy (−60°≤ℓ≤ 18°, |b|≤ 0.5°) in the J = 2–1 rotational transition of 13CO. This isotopologue of CO is less abundant than 12CO by factors up to 100. Therefore, its emission has low to moderate optical depths, and higher critical density, making it an ideal tracer of the cold, dense interstellar medium. The data have been observed with the SHFI single-pixel instrument at APEX. The observational setup covers the 13CO(2−1) and C18O(2−1) lines, plus several transitions from other molecules. Results. The observations have been completed. Data reduction is in progress, and the final data products will be made available in the near future. Here we give a detailed description of the survey and the dedicated data reduction pipeline. To illustrate the scientific potential of this survey, preliminary results based on a science demonstration field covering −20°≤ℓ ≤ −18.5° are presented. Analysis of the 13CO(2−1) data in this field reveals compact clumps, diffuse clouds, and filamentary structures at a range of heliocentric distances. By combining our data with data in the (1–0) transition of CO isotopologues from the ThrUMMS survey, we are able to compute a 3D realization of the excitation temperature and optical depth in the interstellar medium. Ultimately, this survey will provide a detailed, global view of the inner Galactic interstellar medium at an unprecedented angular resolution of ~30′′.

We characterize the lengthscale-dependent rheological properties of mucus from the ubiquitous Chaetopterus marine worm. We use optically trapped probes (2-10 μm) to induce microscopic strains and ...measure the stress response as a function of oscillation amplitude. Our results show that viscoelastic properties are highly dependent on strain scale (l), indicating three distinct lengthscale-dependent regimes at l1 ≤4 μm, l2≈4-10 μm, and l3≥10 μm. While mucus response is similar to water for l1, suggesting that probes rarely contact the mucus mesh, the response for l2 is distinctly more viscous and independent of probe size, indicative of continuum mechanics. Only for l3 does the response match the macroscopic elasticity, likely due to additional stiffer constraints that strongly resist probe displacement. Our results suggest that, rather than a single lengthscale governing crossover from viscous to elastic, mucus responds as a hierarchical network with a loose biopolymer mesh coupled to a larger scaffold responsible for macroscopic gel-like mechanics.
ABSTRACT
We report on four new transiting hot Jupiters discovered by the WASP-South survey. WASP-178b transits a V = 9.9, A1V star with Teff = 9350 ± 150 K, the second-hottest transit host known. It ...has a highly bloated radius of 1.81 ± 0.09 RJup, in line with the known correlation between high irradiation and large size. With an estimated temperature of 2470 ± 60 K, the planet is one of the best targets for studying ultrahot Jupiters that is visible from the Southern hemisphere. The three host stars WASP-184, WASP-185, and WASP-192 are all post-main-sequence G0 stars of ages 4–8 Gyr. The larger stellar radii (1.3–1.7 M⊙) mean that the transits are relatively shallow (0.7–0.9 per cent) even though the planets have moderately inflated radii of 1.2–1.3 RJup. WASP-185b has an eccentric orbit (e = 0.24) and a relatively long orbital period of 9.4 d. A star that is 4.6 arcsec from WASP-185 and 4.4 mag fainter might be physically associated.
ABSTRACT
We report the discovery and characterization of WASP-180Ab, a hot Jupiter confirmed by the detection of its Doppler shadow and by measuring its mass using radial velocities. We find the 0.9 ... ± 0.1 MJup, 1.24 ± 0.04 RJup planet to be in a misaligned, retrograde orbit around an F7 star with Teff = 6500 K and a moderate rotation speed of vsin i⋆ = 19.9 km s−1. The host star is the primary of a V = 10.7 binary, where a secondary separated by ∼5 arcsec (∼1200 au) contributes ∼ 30 per cent of the light. WASP-180Ab therefore adds to a small sample of transiting hot Jupiters known in binary systems. A 4.6-d modulation seen in the WASP data is likely to be the rotational modulation of the companion star, WASP-180B.

Abstract
Although high-sensitivity surveys have revealed a number of highly dispersed pulsars in the inner Galaxy, none have so far been found in the Galactic Centre (GC) region, which we define to ...be within a projected distance of 1 pc from Sgr A*. This null result is surprising given that several independent lines of evidence predict a sizable population of neutron stars in the region. Here, we present a detailed analysis of both the canonical and millisecond pulsar populations in the GC and consider free–free absorption and multipath scattering to be the two main sources of flux density mitigation. We demonstrate that the sensitivity limits of previous surveys are not sufficient to detect GC pulsar population, and investigate the optimum observing frequency for future surveys. Depending on the degree of scattering and free–free absorption in the GC, current surveys constrain the size of the potentially observable population (i.e. those beaming towards us) to be up to 52 canonical pulsars and 10 000 millisecond pulsars. We find that the optimum frequency for future surveys is in the range of 9–13 GHz. We also predict that future deeper surveys with the Square Kilometre array will probe a significant portion of the existing radio pulsar population in the GC.
To investigate the origin of the features discovered in the exoplanet population, the knowledge of exoplanets' mass and radius with a good precision (≲10%) is essential. To achieve this purpose the ...discovery of transiting exoplanets around bright stars is of prime interest. In this paper, we report the discovery of three transiting exoplanets by the SuperWASP survey and the SOPHIE spectrograph with mass and radius determined with a precision better than 15%. WASP-151b and WASP-153b are two hot Saturns with masses, radii, densities and equilibrium temperatures of 0.31−0.03+0.04 MJ$0.31_{-0.03}^{+0.04}\,{M_{\textrm{J}}}$0.31−0.03+0.04 MJ, 1.13−0.03+0.03 RJ$1.13_{-0.03}^{+0.03}\,{R_{\textrm{J}}}$1.13−0.03+0.03 RJ, 0.22−0.02+0.03 ρJ$0.22_{-0.02}^{+0.03}\,\rho_{\mathrm{J}}$0.22−0.02+0.03 ρJ and 1290−10+20 K$1290_{-10}^{+20}~\mathrm{K}$1290−10+20 K, and 0.39−0.02+0.02 MJ$0.39_{-0.02}^{+0.02}\,{M_{\textrm{J}}}$0.39−0.02+0.02 MJ, 1.55−0.08+0.10 RJ$1.55_{-0.08}^{+0.10}\,{R_{\textrm{J}}}$1.55−0.08+0.10 RJ, 0.11−0.02+0.02 ρJ$0.11_{-0.02}^{+0.02}\,\rho_{\mathrm{J}}$0.11−0.02+0.02 ρJ and 1700−0.40+0.40 K$1700_{-40}^{+40}~\mathrm{K}$1700−40+40 K, respectively. Their host stars are early G type stars (with mag V ~ 13) and their orbital periods are 4.53 and 3.33 days, respectively. WASP-156b is a super-Neptune orbiting a K type star (mag V = 11.6). It has a mass of $0.128_{-0.009}^{+0.010}\,{M_{\rm J}}$0.128−0.009+0.010 MJ0.128-0.009+0.010MJ, a radius of $0.51_{-0.02}^{+0.02}\,{R_{\rm J}}$0.51−0.02+0.02 RJ0.51-0.02+0.02RJ, a density of 1.0−0.1+0.1 ρJ$1.0_{-0.1}^{+0.1}\,\rho_{\mathrm{J}}$1.0−0.1+0.1 ρJ, an equilibrium temperature of 970−20+30 K$970_{-20}^{+30}~\mathrm{K}$970−20+30 K and an orbital period of 3.83 days. The radius of WASP-151b appears to be only slightly inflated, while WASP-153b presents a significant radius anomaly compared to a recently published model. WASP-156b, being one of the few well characterized super-Neptunes, will help to constrain the still debated formation of Neptune size planets and the transition between gas and ice giants. The estimates of the age of these three stars confirms an already observed tendency for some stars to have gyrochronological ages significantly lower than their isochronal ages. We propose that high eccentricity migration could partially explain this behavior for stars hosting a short period planet. Finally, these three planets also lie close to (WASP-151b and WASP-153b) or below (WASP-156b) the upper boundary of the Neptunian desert. Their characteristics support that the ultra-violet irradiation plays an important role in this depletion of planets observed in the exoplanet population.
Context.
The Galactic plane has been observed extensively by a large number of Galactic plane surveys from infrared to radio wavelengths at an angular resolution below 40′′. However, a 21 cm line and ...continuum survey with comparable spatial resolution is lacking.
Aims.
The first half of THOR data (
l
= 14.0°−37.9°, and
l
= 47.1°−51.2°, |
b
|≤ 1.25°) has been published in our data release 1 paper. With this data release 2 paper, we publish all the remaining spectral line data and Stokes I continuum data with high angular resolution (10′′–40′′), including a new H
I
dataset for the whole THOR survey region (
l
= 14.0−67.4° and |
b
|≤ 1.25°). As we published the results of OH lines and continuum emission elsewhere, we concentrate on the H
I
analysis in this paper.
Methods.
With the
Karl G. Jansky
Very Large Array (VLA) in C-configuration, we observed a large portion of the first Galactic quadrant, achieving an angular resolution of ≤40′′. At
L
Band, the WIDAR correlator at the VLA was set to cover the 21 cm H
I
line, four OH transitions, a series of H
nα
radio recombination lines (RRLs;
n
= 151 to 186), and eight 128 MHz-wide continuum spectral windows, simultaneously.
Results.
We publish all OH and RRL data from the C-configuration observations, and a new H
I
dataset combining VLA C+D+GBT (VLA D-configuration and GBT data are from the VLA Galactic Plane Survey) for the whole survey. The H
I
emission shows clear filamentary substructures at negative velocities with low velocity crowding. The emission at positive velocities is more smeared-out, likely due to higher spatial and velocity crowding of structures at the positive velocities. Compared to the spiral arm model of the Milky Way, the atomic gas follows the Sagittarius and Perseus Arm well, but with significant material in the inter-arm regions. With the C-configuration-only H
I
+continuum data, we produce an H
I
optical depth map of the THOR areal coverage from 228 absorption spectra with the nearest-neighbor method. With this
τ
map, we corrected the H
I
emission for optical depth, and the derived column density is 38% higher than the column density with optically thin assumption. The total H
I
mass with optical depth correction in the survey region is 4.7 × 10
8
M
⊙
, 31% more than the mass derived assuming the emission is optically thin. If we applied this 31% correction to the whole Milky Way, the total atomic gas mass would be 9.4–10.5 × 10
9
M
⊙
. Comparing the H
I
with existing CO data, we find a significant increase in the atomic-to-molecular gas ratio from the spiral arms to the inter-arm regions.
Conclusions.
The high-sensitivity and resolution THOR H
I
dataset provides an important new window on the physical and kinematic properties of gas in the inner Galaxy. Although the optical depth we derive is a lower limit, our study shows that the optical depth correction issignificant for H
I
column density and mass estimation. Together with the OH, RRL and continuum emission from the THOR survey, these new H
I
data provide the basis for high-angular-resolution studies of the interstellar medium in different phases.
