Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging is currently the mainstay of functional neuroimaging and has allowed researchers to identify intrinsic connectivity networks (aka functional ...networks) at different spatial scales. However, little is known about the temporal profiles of these networks and whether it is best to model them as continuous phenomena in both space and time or, rather, as a set of temporally discrete events. Both categories have been supported by series of studies with promising findings. However, a critical question is whether focusing only on time points presumed to contain isolated neural events and disregarding the rest of the data is missing important information, potentially leading to misleading conclusions. In this work, we argue that brain networks identified within the spontaneous blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal are not limited to temporally sparse burst moments and that these event present time points (EPTs) contain valuable but incomplete information about the underlying functional patterns.
We focus on the default mode and show evidence that is consistent with its continuous presence in the BOLD signal, including during the event absent time points (EATs), i.e., time points that exhibit minimum activity and are the least likely to contain an event. Moreover, our findings suggest that EPTs may not contain all the available information about their corresponding networks. We observe distinct default mode connectivity patterns obtained from all time points (AllTPs), EPTs, and EATs. We show evidence of robust relationships with schizophrenia symptoms that are both common and unique to each of the sets of time points (AllTPs, EPTs, EATs), likely related to transient patterns of connectivity. Together, these findings indicate the importance of leveraging the full temporal data in functional studies, including those using event-detection approaches.

Despite the known benefits of data-driven approaches, the lack of approaches for identifying functional neuroimaging patterns that capture both individual variations and inter-subject correspondence ...limits the clinical utility of rsfMRI and its application to single-subject analyses. Here, using rsfMRI data from over 100k individuals across private and public datasets, we identify replicable multi-spatial-scale canonical intrinsic connectivity network (ICN) templates via the use of multi-model-order independent component analysis (ICA). We also study the feasibility of estimating subject-specific ICNs via spatially constrained ICA. The results show that the subject-level ICN estimations vary as a function of the ICN itself, the data length, and the spatial resolution. In general, large-scale ICNs require less data to achieve specific levels of (within- and between-subject) spatial similarity with their templates. Importantly, increasing data length can reduce an ICN's subject-level specificity, suggesting longer scans may not always be desirable. We also find a positive linear relationship between data length and spatial smoothness (possibly due to averaging over intrinsic dynamics), suggesting studies examining optimized data length should consider spatial smoothness. Finally, consistency in spatial similarity between ICNs estimated using the full data and subsets across different data lengths suggests lower within-subject spatial similarity in shorter data is not wholly defined by lower reliability in ICN estimates, but may be an indication of meaningful brain dynamics which average out as data length increases.
This study evaluated the effect of in ovo Bacillus spp. base probiotic (BBP) administration on hatchability, Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) recovery, performance, and microbiota composition in 2 ...independent trials using a virulent E. coli seeder challenge model. In each trial, one hundred and eighty 18-day-old embryos were allocated into 1 of 2 groups: Control and treated group (inoculated with 107 BBP). On day 19 of embryogenesis, seeder embryos (n = 18) were inoculated with 4.5 × 104E. coli/ mL+ 272 μg/mL tetracycline and segregated into mesh hatching bags. Twelve chicks per group were euthanized at hatch and at day 7 to evaluate the gastrointestinal composition of total GNB or total aerobic pasteurized bacteria. Also, in trial 2, ceca content from five chickens at day 7 were collected to evaluate microbiota composition. Embryos inoculated with BBP showed a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in the total number of GNB at day-of-hatch (DOH) and day 7. Probiotic treatment increased BW at DOH and day 7, and BW gain (days 0 to 7) when compared with Control chickens. Proteobacteria phylum was significantly reduced, while the Firmicutes was significantly increased by the BBP as compared to the Control (P < 0.05). At family level, Enterobacteriaceae was significantly decreased, while the Lachnospiraceae was significantly elevated in the BBP as compared to the Control group (P < 0.05). The genus Oscillospira was significantly enriched in the BBP group, whereas the unidentified genus of family Enterobacteriaceae in the Control group (P < 0.05). The BBP group increased the bacterial species richness, although there was no significant difference between treatments (P > 0.05). Interestingly, beta diversity showed a significant difference in bacterial community structure between Control and BBP groups (P < 0.05). The results of the present study suggest that in ovo administration of a BBP can reduce the severity of virulent E. coli horizontal transmission and infection of broiler chickens during hatch. The reduction in the severity of the transmission and infection by the BPP might be achieved through alterations of microbiota composition and its community structure.
PurposeStudies showing problematic sleep patterns in blind and visually impaired children are often based on (parent) self-report. The purpose was to compare sleep patterns of blind children to ...normally sighted peers using objective measures.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 100 blind (best-corrected visual acuity <3/60) and 100 age- and gender-matched normally sighted children aged 7 to 17 years wore a digital activity monitoring device for 1 week. Sleep quantity (i.e., total sleep time and total time in bed) and sleep quality (number of awakenings, latency, efficiency, wake after sleep onset WASO, and sleep fragmentation index) were measured. Adjusted linear regression analyses were used to model group differences in sleep parameters.ResultsData of 163 children were included. Blind children spent significantly less total time in bed in minutes (β, -31; 95% confidence interval, -56 to -6) and had a lower total sleep time (-41; -66 to -17), smaller number of awakenings (-2.8; -4.5 to -1.0), a lower WASO (-10; -16 to -5), and a more efficient sleep pattern (1.5; 0.1 to 2.8) compared to normally sighted children.ConclusionsAlthough sleep quantity and recommended hours of sleep per night were lower among blind children than normally sighted children, their sleep quality was better. This contradicts findings of self-report studies and warrants further studies to measure sleep objectively. Further, the discrepancy between previous findings and our findings regarding sleep quality may be explained by the house rules of the boarding schools attended by blind children, which may facilitate improved sleep hygiene.

There are many potential applications of ChatGPT in urology, and the extent to which it might improve healthcare may cause a profound shift in the way we deliver our services to patients and the overall healthcare system. This encompasses diagnosis and treatment planning, clinical workflow, patient education, augmenting consultations, and urological research. The ethical and legal considerations include patient autonomy and informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, bias and fairness, human oversight and accountability, trust and transparency, liability and malpractice, intellectual property rights, and regulatory framework.
Summary
The application of ChatGPT in urology has shown great potential to improve patient care and assist urologists in various aspects of clinical practice, research, and education. Complying with data security and privacy regulations, and ensuring human oversight and accountability are some potential solutions to these legal and ethical concerns. The purpose of this review is to analyze the trend in optical features and flexibility changes of flexible ureteroscopes over the past decades, and determine the correlation of individual parameters ...with release period as well as with dimensional parameters. Flexible ureteroscopes mentioned in the literature or those commercially available were searched. To minimize the search bias, the instruments were grouped by release date time-periods of < 2000 year, 2000–2009, 2010–2019, and 2020 onwards. The final review included only those instrument models for which data on minimum and maximum depth of field, field of view, direction of view, and deflection degree had been determined. The correlation among features investigated as well as with release period was also determined. 61 models of flexible ureteroscopes (27 fibreoptic and 34 digital scopes) were included. Among the different features investigated among fiberoptic endoscopes, minimum depth of field positively and negatively correlated with channel size and field of view, respectively, whereas maximum depth of view and field of view positively correlated with overall shaft and deflection degree, respectively. Up and down deflection strongly correlated with each other and both were negatively proportional to the distal tip size. For the digital endoscopes, minimum depth of field negatively and positively correlated with distal tip size and working length, respectively. Maximum depth of field positively correlated with field of view, whereas the latter was negatively proportional to the overall shaft. As for the fiberoptic counterparts, up and down deflection strongly correlated with each other. Field of view, up and down deflection of fiberoptic flexible ureteroscopes, were significantly increased among fiberoptic and digital endoscopes over decades. As flexible ureteroscopy technology has evolved, there has been a trend towards increasing field of view with up and down deflection. Given the importance of scope ergonomics, one aspect of this popularity is the improvement of optical characteristics and deflection degree, which significantly correlates with the release period.
ABSTRACT Fulfilling the rich promise of rapid advances in time-domain astronomy is only possible through confronting our observations with physical models and extracting the parameters that best ...describe what we see. Here, we introduce redback; a Bayesian inference software package for electromagnetic transients. redback provides an object-orientated python interface to over 12 different samplers and over 100 different models for kilonovae, supernovae, gamma-ray burst afterglows, tidal disruption events, engine-driven transients among other explosive transients. The models range in complexity from simple analytical and semi-analytical models to surrogates built upon numerical simulations accelerated via machine learning. redback also provides a simple interface for downloading and processing data from various catalogues such as Swift and FINK. The software can also serve as an engine to simulate transients for telescopes such as the Zwicky Transient Facility and Vera Rubin with realistic cadences, limiting magnitudes, and sky coverage or a hypothetical user-constructed survey or a generic transient for target-of-opportunity observations with different telescopes. As a demonstration of its capabilities, we show how redback can be used to jointly fit the spectrum and photometry of a kilonova, enabling a more powerful, holistic probe into the properties of a transient. We also showcase general examples of how redback can be used as a tool to simulate transients for realistic surveys, fit models to real, simulated, or private data, multimessenger inference with gravitational waves, and serve as an end-to-end software toolkit for parameter estimation and interpreting the nature of electromagnetic transients.
