Adsorption-based desalination attracted increasingly attention due to its ability to co-generate double distilled fresh water and cooling effect using only one heat input. The system employs a ...combination of flash evaporation and thermal compression. This paper presents the current literature review on the dual effect (cooling and desalination) adsorption desalination system (ADS), which is an emerging process of thermal desalination with cooling utilizing low-grade heat source. The paper also presents the adsorbents suitable for adsorption–desalination systems, performance of ADS, and the thermodynamic analysis of the adsorption desalination cycle. A comparison between the stated ADS has been also presented in this study.
COVID-19 is a worldwide pandemic caused by SARS-coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). Less than a year after the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, many vaccines have arrived on the market with innovative ...technologies in the field of vaccinology. Based on the use of messenger RNA (mRNA) encoding the Spike SARS-Cov-2 protein or on the use of recombinant adenovirus vectors enabling the gene encoding the Spike protein to be introduced into our cells, these strategies make it possible to envisage the vaccination in a new light with tools that are more scalable than the vaccine strategies used so far. Faced with the appearance of new variants, which will gradually take precedence over the strain at the origin of the pandemic, these new strategies will allow a much faster update of vaccines to fight against these new variants, some of which may escape neutralization by vaccine antibodies. However, only a vaccination policy based on rapid and massive vaccination of the population but requiring a supply of sufficient doses could make it possible to combat the emergence of these variants. Indeed, the greater the number of infected individuals, the faster the virus multiplies, with an increased risk of the emergence of variants in these RNA viruses. This review will discuss SARS-CoV-2 pathophysiology and evolution approaches in altered transmission platforms and emphasize the different mutations and how they influence the virus characteristics. Also, this article summarizes the common vaccines and the implication of the mutations and genetic variety of SARS-CoV-2 on the COVID-19 biomedical arbitrations.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are newly discovered, small, noncoding ribonucleic acids (RNAs) that play critical roles in the regulation of host genome expression at the posttranscriptional level. During last ...20 years, miRNAs have emerged as key regulators of various biological processes including immune cell lineage commitment, differentiation, maturation, and maintenance of immune homeostasis and normal function. Thus, it is not surprising that dysregulated miRNA expression patterns now have been documented in a broad range of diseases including cancer as well as inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. This rapidly emerging field has revolutionized our understanding of normal immunoregulation and breakdown of self-tolerance. This review focuses on the current understanding of miRNA biogenesis, the role of miRNAs in the regulation of innate and adaptive immunity, and the association of miRNAs with autoimmune diseases. We have discussed miRNA dysregulation and the potential role of miRNAs in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. Given that most autoimmune diseases are female-predominant, we also have discussed sex hormone regulation of miRNAs in inflammatory responses, with an emphasis on estrogen, which now has been shown to regulate miRNAs in the immune system. The field of miRNA regulation of mammalian genes has tremendous potential. The identification of specific miRNA expression patterns in autoimmune diseases as well as a comprehensive understanding of the role of miRNA in disease pathogenesis offers promise of not only novel molecular diagnostic markers but also new gene therapy strategies for treating SLE and other inflammatory autoimmune diseases.
Here, three natural dyes were extracted from different fruits and leaves and used as sensitizers for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Chlorophyll was extracted from spinach leaves using acetone as ...a solvent. Anthocyanin was extracted from red cabbage and onion peels using water. Different characterizations for the prepared natural dyes were conducted including UV-vis absorption, FTIR, and steady-state/time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Various DSSCs based on the extracted dyes were fabricated. The degradation in the power conversion efficiencies was monitored over a week. The effect of the TiO2 mesoporous layers on the efficiency was also studied. The interfaces between the natural dyes and the TiO2 layers were investigated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
In recent years, the rapid progress of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions has offered an immense opportunity for the collection and dissemination of health records in a central data platform. ...Electrocardiogram (ECG), a fast, easy, and non-invasive method, is generally employed in the evaluation of heart conditions that lead to heart ailments and the identification of heart diseases. The deployment of IoT devices for arrhythmia classification offers many benefits such as remote patient care, continuous monitoring, and early recognition of abnormal heart rhythms. However, it is challenging to diagnose and manually classify arrhythmia as the manual diagnosis of ECG signals is a time-consuming process. Therefore, the current article presents the automated arrhythmia classification using the Farmland Fertility Algorithm with Hybrid Deep Learning (AAC-FFAHDL) approach in the IoT platform. The proposed AAC-FFAHDL system exploits the hyperparameter-tuned DL model for ECG signal analysis, thereby diagnosing arrhythmia. In order to accomplish this, the AAC-FFAHDL technique initially performs data pre-processing to scale the input signals into a uniform format. Further, the AAC-FFAHDL technique uses the HDL approach for detection and classification of arrhythmia. In order to improve the classification and detection performance of the HDL approach, the AAC-FFAHDL technique involves an FFA-based hyperparameter tuning process. The proposed AAC-FFAHDL approach was validated through simulation using the benchmark ECG database. The comparative experimental analysis outcomes confirmed that the AAC-FFAHDL system achieves promising performance compared with other models under different evaluation measures.
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is an emerging infection causing a widely spread pandemic of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The current COVID-2019 pandemic is ...prompting fear of falling sick, dying, helplessness and stigma, urgent and timely understanding of mental health status is needed to help the community. Our investigation designed to survey the general population in Saudi Arabia to assess the degree of psychological impact during the pandemic.
During the early stage of the outbreak, we conducted an online-based survey using a snowballing sample technique. The surveys collected data about several aspects of participant sociodemographic, knowledge, concerns, psychological impact, and mental health status. We assessed the psychological impact and mental health status using the Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21).
Our survey recruited 1160 respondents of the general public of Saudi Arabia. Of them, 23.6% reported moderate or severe psychological impact of the outbreak, 28.3%,24%, and 22.3% reported moderate to severe depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms, respectively. Females reported IES-R (B: 5.46, 95% CI: 3.61 to 7.31) and DASS subscales B coefficient ranged from 1.65 to 2.63, along with high-school students, working in the medical field, and poor self-reported health status was significantly associated with a high level of IES-R and DASS scales (p < .05). Experiencing breathing difficulty and dizziness showed a stronger association with higher IES-R and DASS subscales than other somatic symptoms (e.g., headache and fever);(p < .001). Respondents who practiced specific preventative measures (e.g., hand washing, social distancing) demonstrated a protective effect against stress, anxiety, and depression symptoms. Social distancing appeared to be protective on stress and anxiety subscales (B: -1.49, 95% CI: −2.79 to −0.19),(B: -1.53, 95% CI: −2.50 to −0.57),respectively; and hand hygiene on depression subscale (B: -2.43, 95% CI: −4.44 to −0.42).
Throughout the early stage of the COVID-19 outbreak in Saudi Arabia, the results showed that nearly one-fourth of the sampled general population experienced moderate to severe psychological impact. Following specific precautionary measures appeared to have a protective effect on the individual's mental health. Our findings can be used to construct psychological interventions directed toward vulnerable populations and to implement public mental health strategies in the early stages of the outbreak.

Tropical theileriosis is an important protozoan tick-borne disease in cattle. Vaccination using attenuated schizont-infected cell lines is one of the methods used for controlling the disease. This ...study describes the production of attenuated schizont-infected cell lines from Egypt and an evaluation of its use as a vaccine to protect calves against clinical disease upon field challenge. Two groups of exotic and crossbred male calves were divided into vaccinated and control groups. The vaccinated groups were inoculated with 4 ml (1 × 10
cells/ml) of the attenuated cell line. Three weeks after vaccination, calves of both groups were transported to the New Valley Governorate (Egyptian oasis) where they were kept under field conditions and exposed to the natural Theileria annulata challenge. All animals in the control group showed severe clinical signs and died despite treatment with buparvaquone, which was administered after two days of persistent fever due to a severe drop in packed cell volume (PCV). Animals in the vaccinated group became seropositive without developing severe clinical signs other than transient fever. Post-mortem examinations revealed enlarged and fragile lymph nodes, spleen, and liver with necrosis and hemorrhages. These findings indicate that the Egyptian attenuated cell line was successful in protecting both exotic and crossbred animals against tropical theileriosis under field conditions.
Three-dimensional (3D) tissue culture has attracted a great deal of attention as a result of the need to replace the conventional two-dimensional cell cultures with more meaningful methods, ...especially for understanding the sophisticated nature of native tumor microenvironments. However, most techniques for 3D tissue culture are laborious, expensive, and limited to spheroid formation. In this study, a low-cost and highly effective nanofibrous scaffold is presented for spontaneous formation of reproducible 3D breast cancer microtissues. Experimentally, aligned and non-aligned chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) nanofibrous scaffolds were prepared at one of two chitosan concentrations (2 and 4 wt %) and various electrospinning parameters. The resulting fabricated scaffolds (C2P1 and C4P1) were structurally and morphologically characterized, as well as analyzed in silico. The obtained data suggest that the fiber diameter, surface roughness, and scaffold wettability are tunable and can be influenced based on the chitosan concentration, electrospinning conditions, and alignment mode. To test the usefulness of the fabricated scaffolds for 3D cell culture, a breast cancer cell line (MCF-7) was cultured on their surfaces and evaluated morphologically and biochemically. The obtained data showed a higher proliferation rate for cells grown on scaffolds compared to cells grown on two-dimensional adherent plates (tissue culture plate). The MTT assay revealed that the rate of cell proliferation on nanofibrous scaffolds is statistically significantly higher compared to tissue culture plate (P ≤ 0.001) after 14 days of culture. The formation of spheroids within the first few days of culture shows that the scaffolds effectively support 3D tissue culture from the outset of the experiment. Furthermore, 3D breast cancer tissues were spontaneously formed within 10 days of culture on aligned and non-aligned nanofibrous scaffolds, which suggests that the scaffolds imitate the in vivo extracellular matrix in the tumor microenvironment. Detailed mechanisms for the spontaneous formation of the 3D microtissues have been proposed. Our results suggest that scaffold surface topography significantly influences tissue formation and behavior of the cells.
Obesity and chronic diet‐related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and celiac are increasing worldwide. The increasing prevalence of these diseases has ...led nutritionists and food scientists to pay more attention to the relationship between diet and different disease risks. Among different foods, rice has received increasing attention because it is a major component of billions of peoples’ diets throughout the world. Rice is commonly consumed after polishing or whitening and the polished grain is known a high glycemic food because of its high starch content. In addition, the removal of the outer bran layer during rice milling results in a loss of nutrients, dietary fiber, and bioactive components. Therefore, many studies were performed to investigate the potential health benefits for the consumption of whole brown rice (BR) grain in comparison to the milled or white rice (WR). The objective of this work was to review the recent advances in research performed for purposes of evaluation of nutritional value and potential health benefits of the whole BR grain. Studies carried out for purposes of developing BR‐based food products are reviewed. BR safety and preservation treatments are also explored. In addition, economic and environmental benefits for the consumption of whole BR instead of the polished or WR are presented. Furthermore, challenges facing the commercialization of BR and future perspectives to promote its utilization as food are discussed.

nm/RIU) and a low detection limit (DL = 1.4×10
RIU) compared to the existing gas sensor. The brilliant sensing performance and simple design of the proposed structure make our device highly suitable for use as a sensor in a variety of biomedical and industrial applications.
