Soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is an economically important commodity for United States agriculture. Nonetheless, the profitability of soybean production has been negatively impacted by soybean ...diseases. The economic impacts of 23 common soybean diseases were estimated in 28 soybean-producing states in the U.S., from 1996 to 2016 (the entire data set consisted of 13,524 data points). Estimated losses were investigated using a variety of statistical approaches. The main effects of state, year, pre- and post-discovery of soybean rust, region, and zones based on yield, harvest area, and production, were significant on "total economic loss" as a function of diseases. Across states and years, the soybean cyst nematode, charcoal rot, and seedling diseases were the most economically damaging diseases while soybean rust, bacterial blight, and southern blight were the least economically damaging. A significantly greater mean loss (51%) was observed in states/years after the discovery of soybean rust (2004 to 2016) compared to the pre-discovery (1996 to 2003). From 1996 to 2016, the total estimated economic loss due to soybean diseases in the U.S. was $95.48 billion, with $80.89 billion and $14.59 billion accounting for the northern and southern U.S. losses, respectively. Over the entire time period, the average annual economic loss due to soybean diseases in the U.S. reached nearly $4.55 billion, with approximately 85% of the losses occurring in the northern U.S. Low yield/harvest/production zones had significantly lower mean economic losses due to diseases in comparison to high yield/harvest/production zones. This observation was further bolstered by the observed positive linear correlation of mean soybean yield loss (in each state, due to all diseases considered in this study, across 21 years) with the mean state wide soybean production (MT), mean soybean yield (kg ha-1), and mean soybean harvest area (ha). Results of this investigation provide useful insights into how research, policy, and educational efforts should be prioritized in soybean disease management.
Fungicide use in the United States to manage soybean diseases has increased in recent years. The ability of fungicides to reduce disease-associated yield losses varies greatly depending on multiple ...factors. Nonetheless, historical data are useful to understand the broad sense and long-term trends related to fungicide use practices. In the current study, the relationship between estimated soybean yield losses due to selected foliar diseases and foliar fungicide use was investigated using annual data from 28 soybean growing states over the period of 2005 to 2015. For national and regional (southern and northern United States) scale data, mixed effects modeling was performed considering fungicide use as a fixed and state and year as random factors to generate generalized R2 values for marginal (R2GLMM(m); contains only fixed effects) and conditional (R2GLMM(c); contains fixed and random effects) models. Similar analyses were performed considering soybean production data to see how fungicide use affected production. Analyses at both national and regional scales showed that R2GLMM(m) values were significantly smaller compared to R2GLMM(c) values. The large difference between R2 values for conditional and marginal models indicated that the variation of yield loss as well as production were predominantly explained by the state and year rather than the fungicide use, revealing the general lack of fit between fungicide use and yield loss/production at national and regional scales. Therefore, regression models were fitted across states and years to examine their importance in combination with fungicide use on yield loss or yield. In the majority of cases, the relationship was nonsignificant. However, the relationship between soybean yield and fungicide use was significant and positive for majority of the years in the study. Results suggest that foliar fungicides conferred yield benefits in most of the years in the study. Furthermore, the year-dependent usefulness of foliar fungicides in mitigating soybean yield losses suggested the possible influence of temporally fluctuating abiotic factors on the effectiveness of foliar fungicides and/or target disease occurrence and associated loss magnitudes.
This article considers Sean Bonney’s texts Happiness: Poems After Rimbaud (2011), Letters Against the Firmament (2015), Our Death (2019) and antimatter (2019). I write about each of these texts in ...terms of Bonney’s representation within them of music and noise. Rather than discussing this from a musicological perspective, or in relation to particular musical works, I address the metaphorical use that Bonney makes of figures of music and noise in general. I argue that in each case, the way in which Bonney conceives of music is indicative of a wider perspective on political and social reality and its capacity to be transformed by collective action. The article begins by elaborating the relationship between music and noise as I understand it to exist in Bonney’s writing. Following this, I elaborate the conditions of economic austerity under which Bonney lived during the writing of Happiness and Letters Against the Firmament. The article then aims to elaborate the relationship between a thinking of music and a thinking of community in Happiness before considering how harmony functions as a metaphor for class-domination in Bonney’s prose poetry. The article ends with a consideration of antimatter as a work whose use of rhyme and song-like structures is indicative of a specific ontology of catastrophe developed in Our Death.
Following high profile, life changing long term mental illnesses and fatalities in sports such as skiing, cricket and American football—sports injuries feature regularly in national and international ...news. A mismatch between equipment certification tests, user expectations and infield falls and collisions is thought to affect risk perception, increasing the prevalence and severity of injuries. Auxetic foams, structures and textiles have been suggested for application to sporting goods, particularly protective equipment, due to their unique form-fitting deformation and curvature, high energy absorption and high indentation resistance. The purpose of this critical review is to communicate how auxetics could be useful to sports equipment (with a focus on injury prevention), and clearly lay out the steps required to realise their expected benefits. Initial overviews of auxetic materials and sporting protective equipment are followed by a description of common auxetic materials and structures, and how to produce them in foams, textiles and Additively Manufactured structures. Beneficial characteristics, limitations and commercial prospects are discussed, leading to a consideration of possible further work required to realise potential uses (such as in personal protective equipment and highly conformable garments).
Use of seed-applied fungicides has become commonplace in the United States soybean production systems. Although fungicides have the potential to protect seed/seedlings from critical early stage ...diseases such as damping-off and root/stem rots, results from previous studies are not consistent in terms of seed-applied fungicide's ability to mitigate yield losses. In the current study, the relationship between estimated soybean production losses due to seedling diseases and estimated seed-applied fungicide use was investigated using annual data from 28 soybean growing states in the U.S. over the period of 2006 to 2014. National, regional (northern and southern U.S.), state, and temporal scale trends were explored using mixed effects version of the regression analysis. Mixed modeling allowed computing generalized R2 values for conditional (R2GLMM(c); contains fixed and random effects) and marginal (R2GLMM(m); contains only fixed effects) models. Similar analyses were conducted to investigate how soybean production was related to fungicide use. National and regional scale modeling revealed that R2GLMM(c) values were significantly larger compared to R2GLMM(m) values, meaning fungicide use had limited utility in explaining the national/regional scale variation of yield loss and production. The state scale analysis revealed the usefulness of seed-applied fungicides to mitigate seedling diseases-associated soybean yield losses in Illinois, Indiana, North Carolina, and Ohio. Further, fungicide use positively influenced the soybean production and yield in Illinois and South Dakota. Taken together, use of seed-applied fungicide did not appear to be beneficial to many of the states. Our findings corroborate the observations made by a number of scientists through field scale seed-applied fungicide trials across the U.S and reiterate the importance of need base-use of seed-applied fungicides rather than being a routine practice in soybean production systems.
Cotton bacterial blight (CBB), an important disease of (Gossypium hirsutum) in the early 20th century, had been controlled by resistant germplasm for over half a century. Recently, CBB re-emerged as ...an agronomic problem in the United States. Here, we report analysis of cotton variety planting statistics that indicate a steady increase in the percentage of susceptible cotton varieties grown each year since 2009. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that strains from the current outbreak cluster with race 18 Xanthomonas citri pv. malvacearum (Xcm) strains. Illumina based draft genomes were generated for thirteen Xcm isolates and analyzed along with 4 previously published Xcm genomes. These genomes encode 24 conserved and nine variable type three effectors. Strains in the race 18 clade contain 3 to 5 more effectors than other Xcm strains. SMRT sequencing of two geographically and temporally diverse strains of Xcm yielded circular chromosomes and accompanying plasmids. These genomes encode eight and thirteen distinct transcription activator-like effector genes. RNA-sequencing revealed 52 genes induced within two cotton cultivars by both tested Xcm strains. This gene list includes a homeologous pair of genes, with homology to the known susceptibility gene, MLO. In contrast, the two strains of Xcm induce different clade III SWEET sugar transporters. Subsequent genome wide analysis revealed patterns in the overall expression of homeologous gene pairs in cotton after inoculation by Xcm. These data reveal important insights into the Xcm-G. hirsutum disease complex and strategies for future development of resistant cultivars.
Tennis racket design has changed from its conception in 1874. While we know that modern tennis rackets are lighter and have larger heads than their wooden predecessors, it is unknown how their gross ...shape has changed specifically. It is also unknown how racket shape is related to factors that influence performance, like the Transverse and Polar moments of inertia. The aim of this study was to quantify how tennis racket shape has changed over time, with a view to furthering our understanding of how such developments have influenced the game. Two-dimensional morphometric analysis was applied to silhouettes extracted from photographs of 514 rackets dating from 1874 to 2017. A principal component analysis was conducted on silhouette outlines, to allow racket shape to be summarised. The rackets were grouped by age and material for further analysis. Principal Component 1 accounted for 87% of the variation in racket shape. A pairwise Pearson's correlation test indicated that head width and length were both strongly correlated to Principal Component 1 (r = 0.916 & r = 0.801, p-values<0.001). Principal Component 1 was also correlated to the Polar (r = 0.862, p<0.001) and Transverse (r = -0.506, p<0.001) moments of inertia. Racket age and material had a medium (p<0.001, η2p = 0.074) and small (p = 0.015, η2p = 0.017) effect on Principal Component 1, respectively. Mean racket shapes were also generated from the morphometric analyses for the material and age groupings, and we consider how these shape changes may have influenced performance and injury risk. These mean shape groupings could support the development of models, such as finite element analysis, for predicting how historical developments in tennis equipment have affected performance and injury risk.

, is a common lower canopy soybean disease in the southern United States. Recently, target spot has resurged in importance especially following the identification of resistance ...to the quinone outside inhibitor (QoI) fungicides. As a result, a survey of
from soybean throughout Mississippi began in 2018. A total of 819
monoconidial isolates were obtained from 228 fields in 75 counties. The molecular mechanism of QoI resistance was determined, which resulted from an amino acid substitution from glycine (G) to alanine (A) at position 143 using a PCR-RFLP method and comparing nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome
gene. Five previously defined geographic regions were used to present the distribution of the G143A substitution and included the Capital, Coast, Delta, Hills, and Pines. The Capital had the greatest proportion of G143A-containing isolates (95.0%), followed by the Coast (92.9%), Delta (89.8%), Pines (78.8%), and Hills (69.4%). In all, 85.8% of the
isolates carried the G143A substitution. In addition, the effective fungicide concentration (EC
) of randomly selected
isolates to azoxystrobin was used to characterize isolates as resistant (
= 14) (based on the presence of the G143A substitution and EC
values >52 μg/ml) or sensitive (
= 11) (based on the absence of the G143A substitution and EC
values <46 μg/ml). The EC
values varied among isolates (
< 0.0001), with QoI-sensitive isolates exhibiting lower EC
values than QoI-resistant isolates. The current study revealed that a reduction in sensitivity to QoI fungicides has likely resulted based on the percentage of
isolates containing the G143A substitution identified in Mississippi.

Environment Simulator (JULES) for the land. RAL1 defines the science configuration of the dynamics and physics schemes of the atmosphere and
land. This configuration will provide a model baseline for any future weather or climate model developments to be described
against, and it is the intention that from this point forward significant changes to the system will be
documented in the literature. This reproduces the process used for global configurations of the UM,
which was first documented as a science configuration in 2011. While it is our goal to have a single
defined configuration of the model that performs effectively in all regions, this has not yet been
possible. Currently we define two sub-releases, one for mid-latitudes (RAL1-M) and one for tropical
regions (RAL1-T). The differences between RAL1-M and RAL1-T are documented, and where appropriate we define how the model
configuration relates to the corresponding configuration of the global forecasting model.

. However, resistance to QoI fungicides has recently been reported ...within the
population from Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Tennessee as a result of isolates in the population containing the G143A amino acid substitution. Therefore, the relative fitness and stability of isolates containing the G143A substitution compared with wild-type
isolates from Mississippi soybean were investigated by analyzing several fitness parameters in vitro. In addition, in vivo virulence assays were conducted in the greenhouse on a target spot-susceptible cultivar. The evaluations of fitness considered the difference between isolates from the wild-type and G143A-containing genotypes by evaluating colony growth parameters following the first and the 10th subcultures on microbiological media. When considered as an average of all G143A-containing isolates, the G143A-containing isolates following the 10th subculture produced 6.2% greater colony diameter growth but produced 2.3% less conidia. Conversely, over the same period, wild-type isolates produced 6.7% less colony growth but produced 10.9% more conidia. Based on our results, the
isolates that contained the G143A substitution appear stable since successive subculturing did not significantly affect the measured fitness parameters. The lack of fitness cost accompanying the genotypic shift to the G143A amino acid substitution which confers fungicide resistance in
indicates that these isolates may have fitness advantages and may remain stable in the population as well as displace wild-type isolates with repeated fungicide applications of QoI-containing products.
