Interferometric gravitational wave detectors operate with high optical power in their arms in order to achieve high shot-noise limited strain sensitivity. A significant limitation to increasing the ...optical power is the phenomenon of three-mode parametric instabilities, in which the laser field in the arm cavities is scattered into higher-order optical modes by acoustic modes of the cavity mirrors. The optical modes can further drive the acoustic modes via radiation pressure, potentially producing an exponential buildup. One proposed technique to stabilize parametric instability is active damping of acoustic modes. We report here the first demonstration of damping a parametrically unstable mode using active feedback forces on the cavity mirror. A 15 538 Hz mode that grew exponentially with a time constant of 182 sec was damped using electrostatic actuation, with a resulting decay time constant of 23 sec. An average control force of 0.03 nN was required to maintain the acoustic mode at its minimum amplitude.

On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an ...estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of 85 (+21,−14) Mꙩ and 66 (+17,−18) Mꙩ (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below 65 M⊙. We calculate the mass of the remnant to be 142 (+28,−16) Mꙩ, which can be considered an intermediate mass black hole (IMBH). The luminosity distance of the source is 5.3 (+2.4,−2.6) Gpc, corresponding to a redshift of 0.82 (+0.28,−0.34) . The inferred rate of mergers similar to GW190521 is 0.13 (+0.30,−0.11) Gpc^(−3) per yr.
Objective. Analysis of relationships between gender system justification, perceived gender inequality and ambivalent sexism in support for female candidates for the presidential post in Russia. ...Background. Human and gender development indices in Russia are considered to be very high in world rankings, however, promotion of women in politics and top management remains at a very low level, the Russian population is still prone to various biases towards women and their roles in society. Analysis of psychological mechanisms and factors restraining women's empowerment is crucial to understand the lack of positive social change and barriers to quality attainment. Study design. The study examined relationships between gender system justifications, perceived gender inequality, hostile and benevolent sexism and respondents' gender in support for female political candidates for presidency. Correlational online study using analysis of moderated mediation was conducted. Participants. Sample: N=1011 Russian respondents (48% male, 52% female) from 18 to 75 years old (M=35,1; SD=11,94). Measurements. Measures of system justification by J. Jost and A. Kay, Ambivalent sexism inventory by P. Glick and S. Fiske (both adapted to Russian by E. Agadullina), a question on perceived gender inequality in Russia («How would you evaluate gender inequality in Russia?») and a question about willingness to see a woman as a president of Russia («Would you like to see a woman as a president of Russia?»). Results. The direct association between gender system justification and support for a female politician was not found, however, indirect association through perceived gender inequality is significant: gender system justification leads to underestimation of inequality which in turn undermines willingness of the population to support female politicians. Ambivalent (benevolent and hostile) sexism hinders support for female politicians; benevolent (but not hostile) sexism contributes to underestimation of gender inequality in the society. Respondents' gender does not moderate the studied relationships. Conclusions. Gender inequality perceived at low level as well as sexist attitudes are key factors restraining support for women in stereotypically unconventional fields (such as politics). Prevalence of sexist attitudes is one of the possible reasons why positive change is decelerated.
Цель. Анализ связей между оправданием гендерной системы, воспринимаемым гендерным неравенством и амбивалентным сексизмом в готовности поддержать женщину-кандидата на президентский пост. Контекст и актуальность. Показатели человеческого потенциала и гендерного развития в России считаются очень высокими, однако продвижение женщин в политике и высшем управлении остается на низком уровне, а российское население подвержено предубеждениям в отношении женщин и их роли в обществе. Исследование психологических механизмов и факторов, сдерживающих поддержку женщин в разных областях деятельности, важно для понимания отсутствия позитивных изменений и сокращения неравенства в обществе. Дизайн исследования. В работе анализировались связи между оправданием гендерной системы, воспринимаемым гендерным неравенством, враждебным и доброжелательным сексизмом и полом респондентов в поддержке женщины-кандидата на президентство. Для этого проведено корреляционное онлайн-исследование, включающее анализ модерированной медиации. Участники. Выборка: N=1011 россиян (48% мужчин и 52% женщин) от 18 до 75 лет (M=35,1; SD=11,94). Методы (инструменты). Русскоязычные методики оправдания гендерной системы Дж. Джоста и А. Кея и шкала амбивалентного сексизма П. Глика и С. Фиск (адаптированные Е.Р. Агадуллиной), вопрос о воспринимаемом уровне гендерного неравенства в России («Как бы Вы оценили гендерное неравенство в России?») и вопрос о желании видеть женщину в качестве Президента Российской Федерации («Хотели бы Вы видеть женщину на посту президента России?»). Результаты. Не обнаружена прямая связь между оправданием гендерной системы и готовностью поддержать женщину-политика, но опосредованная связь через воспринимаемое гендерное неравенство значима: оправдание системы вкладывается в недооценку неравенства, что в свою очередь подрывает желание населения поддерживать женщину-политика. Амбивалентный (доброжелательный и враждебный) сексизм препятствует поддержке женщин в политике; доброжелательный (но не враждебный сексизм) вкладывается в преуменьшение существующего гендерного неравенства в обществе. Пол респондентов не играет модерирующей роли в исследуемых связях. Основные выводы. Воспринимаемое на низком уровне гендерное неравенство и сексистские установки являются ключевыми факторами, сдерживающими поддержку женщин в стереотипно нетрадиционных областях деятельности (таких как политика). Превалирование сексистских установок является одной из причин замедления позитивных социальных изменений по сокращению неравенства в обществе.
The purpose of this study was to examine the role of existential, epistemic, and relational motivational foundations in the enactment of rape myths. The online study empirically tested a model in ...which motivational foundations were included as predictors, rape myth acceptance as dependent variables, socio-demographic characteristics (gender, education, and income level) - control variables. A total of 739 Russian residents (381 men and 358 women) aged 18 to 79 years (M=36.8, SD=11.5) participated in the online study. Participants were asked to complete questionnaires to measure need for cognitive closure, belief in a dangerous and competitive world, fear of death, shared reality, and acceptance of rape myths. Structural equation modeling showed that the most significant contribution in the support of the rape myth is made by the need for order (epistemic motivational foundations) and belief in a competitive world (existential motivational foundations). The current research shed light on the main motivational foundations of the rape myth acceptance that might be used in the social programs to reduce tolerance towards violence.
Настоящее исследование направлено на изучение роли экзистенциальных, эпистемических и реляционных мотивационных оснований в принятии мифов об изнасиловании. В онлайн-исследовании приняли участие 739 жителей России (381 мужчин и 358 женщин) в возрасте от 18 до 79 лет (M = 36.8, SD = 11.5). Участникам предлагалось заполнить методики для измерения потребности в когнитивной завершенности, веры в опасный и конкурентный мир, страха смерти, потребности в разделенной реальности и принятия мифов об изнасиловании. Результаты моделирования структурными уравнениями показали, что наибольший вклад в принятие мифов об изнасиловании вносят потребность в порядке (эпистемические мотивационные основания) и вера в конкурентный мир (экзистенциальные мотивационные основания). Представленное исследование позволило выявить ключевые мотивационные основания принятия разных мифов об изнасиловании, что можно использовать для разработки программ, направленных на снижение толерантности к проявлению насилия.
