Cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans var. grubii) is an environmentally acquired pathogen causing 181,000 HIV-associated deaths each year. We sequenced 699 isolates, primarily C. neoformans from ...HIV-infected patients, from 5 countries in Asia and Africa. The phylogeny of C. neoformans reveals a recent exponential population expansion, consistent with the increase in the number of susceptible hosts. In our study population, this expansion has been driven by three sub-clades of the C. neoformans VNIa lineage; VNIa-4, VNIa-5 and VNIa-93. These three sub-clades account for 91% of clinical isolates sequenced in our study. Combining the genome data with clinical information, we find that the VNIa-93 sub-clade, the most common sub-clade in Uganda and Malawi, was associated with better outcomes than VNIa-4 and VNIa-5, which predominate in Southeast Asia. This study lays the foundation for further work investigating the dominance of VNIa-4, VNIa-5 and VNIa-93 and the association between lineage and clinical phenotype.

The sensor displayed an excellent limit of detection (LOD) of 53 cfu, limit of quantification (LOQ) of 270 cfu, and showed cross-reactivity with strains BL21 and JM109 due to shared epitopes. This advantageous diagnostic device is a strong candidate for frequent testing at point of care; it also has application in various fields and industries where pathogen detection is of interest.

nanoparticles were synthesized by microwave-assisted co-precipitation. The cluster sizes were tunable by varying the concentration of polymers used during synthesis. Nanoclusters present superparamagnetic behavior at room temperature with a reduction in saturation magnetization as a consequence of coating layer. The shift of blocking temperature to the higher value with increasing clusters size shows the stronger magnetic interaction in larger magnetic clusters. In a low alternating magnetic field with frequency of 178 Hz and amplitude of 103 Oe, nanoclusters offer a high heating efficiency. A maximum specific absorption rate of 204 W/g is observed in the sample with hydrodynamic size of 53 nm. In vitro cytotoxicity analysis performed on HeLa cells verified that nanoclusters show a good biocompatibility and can be an excellent candidate for applications in hyperthermia cancer treatment.
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is recognized as an important comorbidity for the development of tuberculosis (TB). With the increase of DM burden globally, concerns have been raised about the emerging ...co-epidemics of DM and TB, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
A facility-based, cross-sectional study was carried out in all 30 district TB units in Hanoi, Vietnam. All eligible, diagnosed TB patients aged 15 years old or older were asked to provide consent and were screened for diabetes using fasting blood glucose (FBG). Pre-tested semi-structured questionnaires were used for collecting demographic data, lifestyle habits and clinical data. Identification of pre-diabetes or diabetes in TB patients was done in accordance to parameters set by the American Diabetes Association (2016).
Of 870 eligible TB patients, 831 (95.5%) participated in the study. Of those, 241 (29%; 95%CI: 25.9-32.1%) were prediabetic and 114 (13.7%; 95%CI: 11.4-16.1%) were found to have DM. The risk of DM was higher in patients belonging to the age group 40-64 years (OR 6.09; 95%CI 2.81-13.2); or the age group 65 years or older (OR 2.65; 95%CI 1.65-4.25) or who have a family history of DM (OR 2.71; 95%CI 1.33-5.50).
This study demonstrated high prevalence of DM and prediabetes among TB patients in Hanoi, Vietnam. National Tuberculosis Programme needs to establish a systematic screening process for DM among TB patients.
Abstract
Since a detailed inventory of endothelial cell (EC) heterogeneity in breast cancer (BC) is lacking, here we perform single cell RNA-sequencing of 26,515 cells (including 8433 ECs) from 9 BC ...patients and compare them to published EC taxonomies from lung tumors. Angiogenic ECs are phenotypically similar, while other EC subtypes are different. Predictive interactome analysis reveals known but also previously unreported receptor-ligand interactions between ECs and immune cells, suggesting an involvement of breast EC subtypes in immune responses. We also identify a capillary EC subtype (LIPEC (Lipid Processing EC)), which expresses genes involved in lipid processing that are regulated by PPAR-γ and is more abundant in peri-tumoral breast tissue. Retrospective analysis of 4648 BC patients reveals that treatment with metformin (an indirect PPAR-γ signaling activator) provides long-lasting clinical benefit and is positively associated with LIPEC abundance. Our findings warrant further exploration of this LIPEC/PPAR-γ link for BC treatment.
Here we report the synthesis and characterization of four quinoline-derived foldamers with increasing oligomeric length; dimer O2P, tetramer O4P, pentamer O5P, and nonamer O9P functionalized with on ...one end an oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) (OPV) and on the other end a perylene bisimide (PB) chromophore. 1H NMR confirms the formation of the expected folded structures in both toluene and chloroform solution. The structural predictability and rigidity of the oligomeric series enabled us to investigate the effect of a helical bridge and chromophore position on the photoinduced processes in the electron OPV−PB donor−acceptor pair in chloroform and toluene. The helical properties of the bridge ensured that the chromophore separation distance through space is different from the separation distance through the bridge. For all foldamer−solvent combinations studied, excitation of either OPV or PB results in nearly quantitative quenching of the fluorescence indicating a fast charge separation reaction between the OPV and PB. Femtosecond photoinduced absorption measurements confirmed the fast formation of a charge-separated state. The recombination reaction involves a combination of direct decay to the ground state and the formation of an intermediate triplet state, with their balance depending on the foldamer−solvent combination. Molecular orbital calculations rationalize the fast photoinduced charge separation, by revealing that the bridging foldamer mediates the charge transfer from donor to acceptor via the superexchange mechanism. Remarkably low attenuation factors (βCS ≈ 10−2 Å−1) were obtained using either through space or through bridge separation distance. However, in these calculations only three of the four foldamers show the expected linear behavior between the logarithm of the charge separation rate constant and the distance between the chromophores. The combined results show when a helical bridge is separating the charge transfer couple, hampering the usefulness of a uniform description of the charge-separation phenomena.
This manuscript introduces a new adaptive inverse neural (AIN) control method applied to precisely track the piezoelectric (PZT) actuator displacement. First, a 3‐layer neural network optimized by ...the enhanced differential evolution technique which modifies a mutation scheme and provides suggestions for selecting mutant coefficient F, crossover coefficient CR, and population size NP, is used to identify the inverse nonlinearity hysteresis structure of the PZT actuator. Second, a feed‐forward control based on the identified model is proposed to compensate for the PZT hysteresis effect. Third, the Lyapunov stability principle is used to design and implement an adaptive law‐based neural sliding mode model plus the feed‐forward compensator to ensure that the whole PZT plant is operated in asymptotical stability. The experiment results demonstrate the proposed AIN controller proves superiority in comparison with other advanced control methods.
In January 2020, we identified two severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2)‐infected patients in a familial cluster with one person coming from Wuhan, China. The complete genome ...sequences of two SARS‐CoV‐2 strains isolated from these patients were identical and 99.98% similar to strains isolated in Wuhan. This is genetically suggestive of human‐to‐human transmission of SARS‐CoV‐2 and indicates Wuhan as the most plausible origin of the early outbreak in Vietnam. The younger patient had a mild upper respiratory illness and a brief viral shedding, whereas the elderly with multi‐morbidity had pneumonia, prolonged viral shedding, and residual lung damage. The evidence of nonsynonymous substitutions in the ORF1ab region of the viral sequence warrants further studies.

Rapid socio-economic development in suburban areas of developing countries has induced changes in agricultural waste and nutrient management, resulting in water pollution. The study aimed at ...estimating agricultural nutrient cycles and their contribution to the water environment. A material flow model of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) was developed focusing on agricultural activities from 1980 to 2010 in Trai hamlet, an agricultural watershed in Nhue-Day River basin, Vietnam. The model focused on the change in household management of human excreta and livestock excreta, and chemical fertilizer consumption. The results showed that the proportion of nutrients from compost/manure applied to paddy fields decreased from 85 to 41% for both N and P between 1980 and 2010. The nutrient inputs derived from chemical fertilizer decreased 6% between 1980 and 2000 for both N and P. Then, these nutrients increased 1.4 times for N and 1.2 times for P from 2000 to 2010. As of 2010, the total inputs to paddy fields have amounted to 435 kg-N/ha/year and 90 kg-P/ha/year. Of these nutrient inputs, 40% of N and 65% of P were derived from chemical fertilizer. Thirty per cent (30%) of total N input was discharged to the water bodies through agricultural runoff and 47% of total P input accumulated in soil.
