ABSTRACT
We study the optical evolution of the 2015 outburst in V404 Cyg, with emphasis on the peculiar nebular phase and subsequent decay to quiescence. From the decay time-scale of the Balmer ...emission associated with the nebula, we measure an outflow mass Mwind ≃ 4 × 10−6 M⊙. Remarkably, this is ∼100 times larger than the accreted mass and ∼10 per cent of the total mass stored in the disc. The wind efficiency must therefore be significantly larger than previous estimates for black hole transients, suggesting that radiation pressure (in addition to other mechanisms such as Compton-heating) plays a key role in V404 Cyg. In addition, we compare the evolution of the 2015 and 1989 outbursts and find not only clear similarities (namely a large luminosity drop ∼10 d after the X-ray trigger, followed by a brief nebular phase) but also remarkable differences in decay time-scales and long-term evolution of the H α profile. In particular, we see evidence for a rapid disc contraction in 2015, consistent with a burst of mass transfer. This could be driven by the response of the companion to hard X-ray illumination, most notably during the last gigantic (super-Eddington) flare on 2015 June 25. We argue that irradiation and consequential disc wind are key factors to understand the different outburst histories in 1989 and 2015. In the latter case, radiation pressure may be responsible for the abrupt end of the outburst through depleting inner parts of the disc, thus quenching accretion and X-ray irradiation. We also present a refined orbital period and updated ephemeris.
Munk's pygmy devil rays (Mobula munkiana) are medium-size, zooplanktivorous filter feeding, elasmobranchs characterized by aggregative behavior, low fecundity and delayed reproduction. These traits ...make them susceptible to targeted and by-catch fisheries and are listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List. Multiple studies have examined fisheries impacts, but nursery areas or foraging neonate and juvenile concentrations have not been examined. This study describes the first nursery area for M. munkiana at Espiritu Santo Archipelago, Mexico. We examined spatial use of a shallow bay during 22 consecutive months in relation to environmental patterns using traditional tagging (n = 95) and acoustic telemetry (n = 7). Neonates and juveniles comprised 84% of tagged individuals and their residency index was significantly greater inside than outside the bay; spending a maximum of 145 consecutive days within the bay. Observations of near-term pregnant females, mating behavior, and neonates indicate an April to June pupping period. Anecdotal photograph review indicated that the nursery area is used by neonates and juveniles across years. These findings confirm, for the first time, the existence of nursery areas for Munk's pygmy devil rays and the potential importance of shallow bays during early life stages for the conservation of this species.
The X-ray transient XTE J1719−291 was discovered with Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer/Proportional Counter Array (RXTE/PCA) during its outburst in 2008 March, which lasted at least 46 d. Its 2-10 keV ...peak luminosity is 7 × 1035 erg s−1 assuming a distance of 8 kpc, which classifies the system as a very faint X-ray transient. The outburst was monitored with Swift, RXTE, Chandra and XMM-Newton. We analysed the X-ray spectral evolution during the outburst. We fitted the overall data with a simple power-law model corrected for absorption and found that the spectrum softened with decreasing luminosity. However, the XMM-Newton spectrum cannot be fitted with a simple one-component model, but it can be fitted with a thermal component (blackbody or disc blackbody) plus a power-law model affected by absorption. Therefore, the softening of the X-ray spectrum with decreasing X-ray luminosity might be due to a change in photon index or alternatively it might be due to a change in the properties of the soft component. Assuming that the system is an X-ray binary, we estimated a long-term time-averaged mass accretion rate of
∼ 7.7 × 10−13 M⊙ yr−1 for a neutron star as a compact object and
∼ 3.7 × 10−13 M⊙ yr−1 in the case of a black hole. Although no conclusive evidence is available about the nature of the accretor, based on the X-ray/optical luminosity ratio we tentatively suggest that a neutron star is present in this system.
ABSTRACT
We present two contiguous nights of simultaneous time-resolved Gran Telescopio Canarias spectroscopy and William Herschel Telescope photometry of the black hole X-ray transient XTE ...J1859+226, obtained in 2017 July during quiescence. Cross-correlation of the individual spectra against a late K-type spectral template enabled us to constrain the orbital period to 0.276 ± 0.003 d and the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor star to K2 = 550 ± 59 km s−1. An ellipsoidal modulation is detected in the photometric r- and i-band light curves, although it is strongly contaminated by flickering activity. By exploiting correlations between the properties of the double-peaked H α emission-line profile and the binary parameters, we derived an orbital inclination of 66.6 ± 4.3 deg, a refined K2 = 562 ± 40 km s−1 and mass ratio q = M2/M1 = 0.07 ± 0.01. From these values, we obtained an updated black hole mass of M1 = 7.8 ± 1.9 M⊙. An independent mass estimate based on X-ray timing agrees well with our value, which gives further support for the outburst quasi-periodic oscillation triplet being explained by the relativistic precession model. We also obtained a companion star mass M2 = 0.55 ± 0.16 M⊙, which is consistent with its K5-K7 V spectral type.
We present simultaneous optical and near-infrared spectra obtained during the 2021 outburst of the black hole transient 4U 1543–47. The X-ray hardness-intensity diagram and the comparison with ...similar systems reveal a luminous outburst, probably reaching the Eddington luminosity, as well as a long-lasting excursion to the so-called ultra-luminous state. VLT/X-shooter spectra were taken in two epochs 14 days apart during the early and brightest part of the outburst, while the source was in this ultra-luminous accretion state. The data show strong H and He
I
emission lines, as well as high-excitation He
II
and O
III
transitions. Most lines are single-peaked in both spectra, except for the O
III
lines that exhibit evident double-peaked profiles during the second epoch. The Balmer lines are embedded in broad absorption wings that we believe are mainly produced by the contribution of the A2V donor to the optical flux, which we estimate to be in the range of 11–14% in the
r
band during our observations. Although no conspicuous outflow features are found, we observe some wind-related line profiles, particularly in the near-infrared. Such lines include broad emission line wings and skewed red profiles, suggesting the presence of a cold (i.e., low ionisation) outflow with similar observational properties to those found in other low-inclination black hole transients.
Abstract
We present a detailed spectroscopic study of the optical counterpart of the neutron star X-ray transient Aquila X-1 during its 2011, 2013 and 2016 outbursts. We use 65 intermediate ...resolution GTC-10.4 m spectra with the aim of detecting irradiation-induced Bowen blend emission from the donor star. While Gaussian fitting does not yield conclusive results, our full phase coverage allows us to exploit Doppler mapping techniques to independently constrain the donor star radial velocity. By using the component N iii 4640.64/4641.84 Å, we measure Kem = 102 ± 6 km s−1. This highly significant detection (≳13σ) is fully compatible with the true companion star radial velocity obtained from near-infrared spectroscopy during quiescence. Combining these two velocities we determine, for the first time, the accretion disc opening angle and its associated error from direct spectroscopic measurements and detailed modelling, obtaining α = 15.5 $^{+ 2.5}_{-5}$ deg. This value is consistent with theoretical work if significant X-ray irradiation is taken into account and is important in the light of recent observations of GX339-4, where discrepant results were obtained between the donor's intrinsic radial velocity and the Bowen-inferred value. We also discuss the limitations of the Bowen technique when complete phase coverage is not available.
We present the discovery of an optical accretion disk wind in the X-ray transient Swift J1858.6-0814. Our 90-spectrum data set, taken with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescope over eight ...different epochs and across five months, reveals the presence of conspicuous P-Cyg profiles in He i at 5876 and H . These features are detected throughout the entire campaign, albeit their intensity and main observational properties are observed to vary on timescales as short as 5 minutes. In particular, we observe significant variations in the wind velocity, between a few hundreds and ∼2400 . In agreement with previous reports, our observations are characterized by the presence of frequent flares, although the relation between the continuum flux variability and the presence/absence of wind features is not evident. The reported high activity of the system at radio waves indicates that the optical wind of Swift J1858.6-0814 is contemporaneous with the radio jet, as is the case for the handful of X-ray binary transients that have shown so far optical P-Cyg profiles. Finally, we compare our results with those of other sources showing optical accretion disk winds, with emphasis on V404 Cyg and V4641 Sgr, since they also display strong and variable optical wind features as well as similar flaring behavior.
We present a 30-day monitoring campaign of the optical counterpart of the bright X-ray transient Swift J1745−26, starting only 19 min after the discovery of the source. We observe the system peaking ...at i
′ ∼ 17.6 on day six (MJD 561 92) to then decay at a rate of ∼0.04 mag d−1. We show that the optical peak occurs at least 3 d later than the hard X-ray (15-50 keV) flux peak. Our measurements result in an outburst amplitude greater than 4.3 mag, which favours an orbital period 21 h and a companion star with a spectral type later than ∼A0. Spectroscopic observations taken with the Gran Telescopio de Canarias 10.4 m telescope reveal a broad (full width at half-maximum ∼1100 km s−1), double-peaked Hα emission line from which we constrain the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor to be K
2 > 250 km s−1. The breadth of the line and the observed optical and X-ray fluxes suggest that Swift J1745−26 is a new black hole candidate located closer than ∼7 kpc.
The X-ray dipper MAXI J1305-704 is a dynamically confirmed black hole (BH) X-ray binary discovered a decade ago. While its only outburst has been studied in detail in X-rays, follow-up at other ...wavelengths has been scarce. We report here the results from an optical spectroscopy campaign across the outburst of MAXI J1305-704. We analysed two epochs of data obtained by the Magellan Clay Telescope during two consecutive nights, when the source was in a soft X-ray spectral state. We identified typical emission lines from outbursting low-mass X-ray binaries, such as the hydrogen Balmer series, He II 4686 Å and the Bowen blend. We focused our analysis on the prominent H α line, which exhibits asymmetric emission and variable absorption components. We applied both traditional analytical methods and machine-learning techniques in order to explore the association of the absorption features with outflowing phenomena, and we conclude that they are best explained by broad absorption. This result is consistent with reports from other outbursting BHs, where optical outflows have predominantly been observed in the hard state. Further observations at different X-ray states are key to properly test whether this behaviour is universal and to determine the implications for the disc wind physics.
ABSTRACT
We present a new method to derive binary inclinations in quiescent black hole (BH) X-ray transients (XRTs), based on the depth of the trough (T) from double-peaked H α emission profiles ...arising in accretion discs. We find that the inclination angle (i) is linearly correlated with T in phase-averaged spectra with sufficient orbital coverage (≳50 per cent) and spectral resolution, following i(deg) = 93.5 × T + 23.7. The correlation is caused by a combination of line opacity and local broadening, where a leading (excess broadening) component scales with the deprojected velocity of the outer disc. Interestingly, such scaling allows to estimate the fundamental ratio M1/Porb by simply resolving the intrinsic width of the double-peak profile. We apply the T–i correlation to derive binary inclinations for GRO J0422+32 and Swift J1357−0933, two BH XRTs where strong flickering activity has hindered determining their values through ellipsoidal fits to photometric light curves. Remarkably, the inclination derived for GRO J0422+32 (i = 55.6 ± 4.1○) implies a BH mass of $2.7^{+0.7}_{-0.5}$ M⊙ thus placing it within the gap that separates BHs from neutron stars. This result proves that low-mass BHs exist in nature and strongly suggests that the so-called ‘mass gap’ is mainly produced by low number statistics and possibly observational biases. On the other hand, we find that Swift J1357−0933 contains a $10.9^{+1.7}_{-1.6}$ M⊙ BH, seen nearly edge on ($i=87.4^{+2.6}_{-5.6}$ deg). Such extreme inclination, however, should be treated with caution since it relies on extrapolating the T–i correlation beyond i ≳ 75○, where it has not yet been tested.
