There is clear agreement about the importance of promoting emotional intelligence in school through programs integrated in the academic curriculum. The objective of this study is to analyze the ...impact of the EDI program on the emotional intelligence trait and on general academic performance, as well as mathematics and language performance. The participants were 5th grade elementary school students between 10 and 11 years old. A quasi-experimental repeated-measures design was used, with a comparison group and four assessment points. The results showed, on the one hand, the effectiveness of a two-year intervention in improving emotional intelligence and, on the other hand, its positive influence on academic performance in general, and specifically on mathematics and language performance. In the non-intervention group, general academic performance and language performance declined. The results are discussed, and recommendations are made for future interventions.
In this work we present a dual optical and electrochemical sensor based on SiO2/Si3N4 resonant nanopillars covered with an indium tin oxide (ITO) thin film. A 25–30 nm thick ITO layer deposited by ...magnetron sputtering acts as an electrode when incorporated onto the nanostructured array, without compromising the optical sensing capability of the nanopillars. Bulk sensing performances before and after ITO deposition have been measured and compared in accordance with theoretical calculations. The electrochemical activity has been determined by the ferri/ferrocyanide redox reaction, showing a remarkably higher activity than that of flat thin films of similar ITO nominal thickness, and proving that the nanopillar system covered by ITO presents electrical continuity. A label-free optical biological detection has been performed, where the presence of amyloid-β has been detected through an immunoassay enhanced with gold nanoparticles. Again, the experimental results have been corroborated by theoretical simulations. We have demonstrated that ITO can be a beneficial component for resonant nanopillars sensors by adding potential electrochemical sensing capabilities, without significantly altering their optical properties. We foresee that resonant nanopillars coated with a continuous ITO film could be used for simultaneous optical and electrochemical biosensing, improving the robustness of biomolecular identification.
The cornerstone of malaria prevention in pregnancy, intermittent preventive treatment (IPTp) with sulfadoxine–pyrimethamine, is contraindicated in women with HIV who are receiving co-trimoxazole ...prophylaxis. We assessed whether IPTp with dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine is safe and effective in reducing the risk of malaria infection in women with HIV receiving co-trimoxazole prophylaxis and antiretroviral drugs.
For this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, women with HIV attending the first antenatal care clinic visit, resident in the study area, and with a gestational age up to 28 weeks were enrolled at five sites in Gabon and Mozambique. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive either IPTp with dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine at each scheduled antenatal care visit plus daily co-trimoxazole (intervention group) or placebo at each scheduled antenatal care visit plus daily co-trimoxazole (control group). Randomisation was done centrally via block randomisation (block sizes of eight), stratified by country. IPTp was given over 3 days under direct observation by masked study personnel. The number of daily IPTp tablets was based on bodyweight and according to the treatment guidelines set by WHO (target dose of 4 mg/kg per day range 2–10 mg/kg per day of dihydroartemisinin and 18 mg/kg per day range 16–27 mg/kg per day of piperaquine given once a day for 3 days). At enrolment, all participants received co-trimoxazole (fixed combination drug containing 800 mg trimethoprim and 160 mg sulfamethoxazole) for daily intake. The primary study outcome was prevalence of peripheral parasitaemia detected by microscopy at delivery. The modified intention-to-treat population included all randomly assigned women who had data for the primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included frequency of adverse events, incidence of clinical malaria during pregnancy, and frequency of poor pregnancy outcomes. All study personnel, investigators, outcome assessors, data analysts, and participants were masked to treatment assignment. This study is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov, NCT03671109.
From Sept 18, 2019, to Nov 26, 2021, 666 women (mean age 28·5 years SD 6·4) were enrolled and randomly assigned to the intervention (n=332) and control (n=334) groups. 294 women in the intervention group and 308 women in the control group had peripheral blood samples taken at delivery and were included in the primary analysis. Peripheral parasitaemia at delivery was detected in one (<1%) of 294 women in the intervention group and none of 308 women in the control group. The incidence of clinical malaria during pregnancy was lower in the intervention group than in the control group (one episode in the intervention group vs six in the control group; relative risk RR 0·12, 95% CI 0·03–0·52, p=0·045). In a post-hoc analysis, the composite outcome of overall malaria infection (detected by any diagnostic test during pregnancy or delivery) was lower in the intervention group than in the control group (14 5% of 311 women vs 31 10% of 320 women; RR 0·48, 95% CI 0·27–0·84, p=0·010). The frequency of serious adverse events and poor pregnancy outcomes (such as miscarriages, stillbirths, premature births, and congenital malformations) did not differ between groups. The most frequently reported drug-related adverse events were gastrointestinal disorder (reported in less than 4% of participants) and headache (reported in less than 2% of participants), with no differences between study groups.
In the context of low malaria transmission, the addition of IPTp with dihydroartemisinin–piperaquine to co-trimoxazole prophylaxis in pregnant women with HIV did not reduce peripheral parasitaemia at delivery. However, the intervention was safe and associated with a decreased risk of clinical malaria and overall Plasmodium falciparum infection, so it should be considered as a strategy to protect pregnant women with HIV from malaria.

Anthropometric and metabolic parameters were evaluated in the study population. To assess whether anorexia nervosa affects mitochondrial function and redox state in leukocytes of anorexic patients, we measured mitochondrial oxygen consumption, membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, glutathione levels, mitochondrial mass, and complex I and III activity in polymorphonuclear cells.
Mitochondrial function was impaired in the leukocytes of the anorexic patients. This was evident in a decrease in mitochondrial O2 consumption (P<0.05), mitochondrial membrane potential (P<0.01) and GSH levels (P<0.05), and an increase in ROS production (P<0.05) with respect to control subjects. Furthermore, a reduction of mitochondrial mass was detected in leukocytes of the anorexic patients (P<0.05), while the activity of mitochondrial complex I (P<0.001), but not that of complex III, was found to be inhibited in the same population.
Oxidative stress is produced in the leukocytes of anorexic patients and is closely related to mitochondrial dysfunction. Our results lead us to propose that the oxidative stress that occurs in anorexia takes place at mitochondrial complex I. Future research concerning mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress should aim to determine the physiological mechanism involved in this effect and the physiological impact of anorexia.

Additionally, we evaluate endocrine parameters and levels of interleukin 6 (IL6) and tumour necrosis factor alpha (TNFα).
Our study population was comprised of 35 women of reproductive age diagnosed with PCOS and treated with metformin for 12 weeks, and their corresponding controls (n=41), adjusted by age and BMI. We evaluated the alteration of endocrinological and anthropometrical parameters and androgen levels. Mitochondrial O2 consumption (using a Clark-type O2 electrode), membrane potential, mitochondrial mass, and levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH) (by means of fluorescence microscopy) were assessed in poymorphonuclear cells. H2O2 was evaluated with the Amplex Red(R) H2O2/Peroxidase Assay kit. IL6 and TNFα were measured using the Luminex 200 flow analyser system.
Metformin had beneficial effects on patients by increasing mitochondrial O2 consumption, membrane potential, mitochondrial mass and glutathione levels, and by decreasing levels of reactive oxygen species and H2O2. In addition, metformin reduced glucose, follicle-stimulating hormone, IL6 and TNFα levels and increased dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate levels. HOMA-IR and mitochondrial function biomarkers positively correlated with ROS production (r=0.486, P=0.025), GSH content (r=0.710, P=0.049) and H2O2 (r=0.837, P=0.010), and negatively correlated with membrane potential (r=-0.829, P=0.011) at baseline. These differences disappeared after metformin treatment.
Our results demonstrate the beneficial effects of metformin treatment on mitochondrial function in leukocytes of PCOS patients.
Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) has been associated with a greater incidence and mortality of cancer, although such findings are inconsistent. However, no large studies are currently available to ...investigate this association in patients with a specific type of cancer. This study seeks to assess potential relationships between SDB severity and aggressiveness markers of cutaneous melanoma.
Four hundred and forty-three patients with a diagnosis of melanoma underwent a sleep study within 6 months of diagnosis. General demographics were collected, along with melanoma characteristics and polygraphic parameters consisting of the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and indices of both continuous and intermittent night-time oxyhemoglobin desaturation (DI4%). An exploration of independent relationships between SDB and various objective melanoma aggressiveness markers (Breslow index, presence of ulceration, presence of regression, mitotic index, stage of severity, damage to the sentinel lymph, and spreading of the melanoma) was performed.
Patients in the upper tertiles of AHI or DI4% were 1.94 (95% CI, 1.14-3.32; P = .022) and 1.93 (95% CI, 1.14-3.26; P = .013) times more likely, respectively, to present with aggressive melanoma (Breslow index > 1 mm) than those in the lowest tertiles of these sleep attributes after adjustment for age, sex, tumor location, and BMI. This association was particularly prominent among patients < 56 years of age with Breslow index > 2 mm. The presence of the additional markers of aggressiveness was also associated with higher AHI and DI4% values.
The severity of SDB was independently associated with greater aggressiveness of cutaneous melanoma, particularly among younger patients.
Nitric oxide (NO) has an important role in physiological and pathological processes in general, and in particular plays a homeostatic role in the nervous and immune systems. The many different ...physiological functions of NO include those of a mediator of blood vessel dilation, neurotransmitter, neuromodulator and inductor of mitochondrial biogenesis. In addition, NO can transform into highly reactive and harmful molecules producing an impairment of the DNA, lipids or proteins, and thus altering their function. This dual action of NO, by which it plays an important role in homeostasis and aids the development of pathological processes, makes this molecule an interesting target for medical therapies, especially with respect to the nervous and immune systems. This review describes the multiple roles of NO played out in the nervous and immune systems during different physiological and pathophysiological processes.
Evidence is mounting of the involvement of mitochondrial dysfunction in insulin resistance, diabetes and associated complications. This review aims to provide an overview of the effects of insulin ...resistance on mitochondrial function in several tissues. We consider the pathogenesis of insulin resistance from a mitochondrial perspective and contemplate potential beneficial effects of strategies aimed at modulating mitochondrial function in insulin resistance, including insulin and insulin-sensitizing drugs, antioxidants, and selectively targeting antioxidants to mitochondria.
Abstract
Introduction
There is scarce real-world experience regarding direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) perioperative management. No study before has linked bridging therapy or DOAC-free time ...(pre-plus postoperative time without DOAC) with outcome. The aim of this study was to investigate real-world management and outcomes.
Methods
RA-ACOD is a prospective, observational, multicenter registry of adult patients on DOAC treatment requiring surgery. Primary outcomes were thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications. Follow-up was immediate postoperative (24–48 hours) and 30 days. Statistics were performed using a univariate and multivariate analysis. Data are presented as odds ratios (ORs 95% confidence interval).
Results
From 26 Spanish hospitals, 901 patients were analyzed (53.5% major surgeries): 322 on apixaban, 304 on rivaroxaban, 267 on dabigatran, 8 on edoxaban. Fourteen (1.6%) patients suffered a thrombotic event, related to preoperative DOAC withdrawal (OR: 1.57 1.03–2.4) and DOAC-free time longer than 6 days (OR: 5.42 1.18–26). Minor bleeding events were described in 76 (8.4%) patients, with higher incidence for dabigatran (12.7%) versus other DOACs (6.6%). Major bleeding events occurred in 17 (1.9%) patients. Bridging therapy was used in 315 (35%) patients. It was associated with minor (OR: 2.57 1.3–5.07) and major (OR: 4.2 1.4–12.3) bleeding events, without decreasing thrombotic events.
Conclusion
This study offers real-world data on perioperative DOAC management and outcomes in a large prospective sample size to date with a high percentage of major surgery. Short-term preprocedural DOAC interruption depending on the drug, hemorrhagic risk, and renal function, without bridging therapy and a reduced DOAC-free time, seems the safest practice.
