The A/Z dependence of projectile fragmentation at relativistic energies has been studied with the ALADIN forward spectrometer at SIS. A stable beam of (124)Sn and radioactive beams of (124)La and ...(107)Sn at 600 MeV per nucleon have been used in order to explore a wide range of isotopic compositions. Chemical freeze-out temperatures are found to be nearly invariant with respect to the A/Z of the produced spectator sources, consistent with predictions for expanded systems. Small Coulomb effects (DeltaT approximately 0.6 MeV) appear for residue production near the onset of multifragmentation.
The Rare ISotopes INvestigation at GSI project combines the former EUROBALL Ge-Cluster detectors, the MINIBALL Ge detectors, BaF
2-HECTOR detectors, and the fragment separator at GSI for ...high-resolution in-beam
γ
-ray spectroscopy measurements with radioactive beams. These secondary beams produced at relativistic energies are used for Coulomb excitation or secondary fragmentation experiments in order to explore the nuclear structure of the projectiles or projectile like nuclei by measuring de-excitation photons. The newly designed detector array is described and the performance characteristics are given. Moreover, particularities of the experimental technique are discussed.
The family Leeuwenhoekiidae has a worldwide distribution. In Brazil, it is represented by five genera and 10 species parasitising all groups of terrestrial vertebrates. Examination of material housed ...in the Acari Collection of the Instituto Butantan revealed undescribed species belonging to this family. In the present study, we describe a new genus, Caramuruacarus gen. nov., with the type species Caramuruacarus carnavalesca sp. nov. from the Minas Gerais State and a new species for the genus Whartonia, Whartonia parauapebensis sp. nov., from Pará State, both from the soil of Brazilian caves. In addition, a discussion of the genus Whartonia and its subgenera is provided.

The Farcos project (Femtoscope Array for Correlations and Spectroscopy) is discussed in this contribution. It consists of a new detector array designed and constructed by Exochim-Chimera group at ...INFN of Catania and Laboratori Nazionali del Sud. The array is described in its design and scientific goals to address. Some of the first preliminary tests with radioactive sources and beams are also discussed, together with some highlights of future perspectives.
•Dobutamine infusion profoundly affects oxygen extraction in horses anaesthetised with isoflurane.•All the OTIs tested in this study demonstrated a poor correlation with the Qs/Qt.•F-shunt is the ...most reliable OI for the estimation of Qs/Qt independent of the haemodynamic conditions of the patient.•OTIs should be used cautiously in horses under isoflurane anaesthesia.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of commonly used oxygenation indices with venous admixture (Qs/Qt) in anaesthetised horses under different infusion rates of dobutamine. Six female horses were anaesthetised with acepromazine, xylazine, diazepam, ketamine, and isoflurane, and then intubated and mechanically ventilated with 100% O2. A Swan–Ganz catheter was introduced into the left jugular vein and its tip advanced into the pulmonary artery. Horses received different standardised rates of dobutamine.
For each horse, eight samples of arterial and mixed venous blood were simultaneously obtained at fixed times. Arterial and venous haemoglobin (Hb) concentration and O2 saturation, arterial oxygen partial pressure (PaO2), venous oxygen partial pressure (PvO2), and barometric pressure were measured. Arterial (CaO2), mixed venous (CvO2), and capillary (Cc′O2) oxygen contents were calculated using standard formulae. The correlations between F-shunt, arterial oxygen tension to fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (PaO2/FiO2), arterial to alveolar oxygen tension ratio (PaO2/PAO2), alveolar to arterial oxygen tension difference (PA − aO2), and respiratory index (PA − aO2/PaO2) were tested with linear regression analysis. The goodness-of-fit for each calculated formula was evaluated by means of the coefficient of determination (r2). The agreement between Qs/Qt and F-shunt was analysed with the Bland–Altman test.
All tested oxygen tension-based indices were weakly correlated (r2 < 0.2) with the Qs/Qt, whereas F-shunt showed a stronger correlation (r2 = 0.73). F-shunt also showed substantial agreement with Qs/Qt independent of the dobutamine infusion rate. F-shunt better correlated with Qs/Qt than other oxygen indices in isoflurane-anaesthetised horses under different infusion rates of dobutamine.
Chigger mites are ectoparasites of terrestrial tetrapods and can cause dermatitis in the host, known as trombiculiasis. In Brazil, there are 73 species of chiggers; however, cats never have recorded ...as a host in this country. Here, we report the first record of chiggers parasitizing a domestic cat in Brazil; and a new locality for
Eutrombicula tinami

The performance of the LAND neutron detector is studied. Using an event-mixing technique based on one-neutron data obtained in the S107 experiment at the GSI laboratory, we test the efficiency of ...various analytic tools used to determine the multiplicity and kinematic properties of detected neutrons. A new algorithm developed recently for recognizing neutron showers from spectator decays in the ALADIN experiment S254 is described in detail. Its performance is assessed in comparison with other methods. The properties of the observed neutron events are used to estimate the detection efficiency of LAND in this experiment.
The chigger mite genus Blankaartia includes 28 known species, of which 10 are distributed in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions. These species preferentially parasitize birds, but occasionally they ...can also be found on rodents, bats, and reptiles, showing low host selectivity. In the present study, we report the presence of this genus in Brazil for the first time, including the first report of Blankaartia sinnamaryi (Floch and Fauran) and the description of a new species of Blankaartia collected from birds (Order Passeriformes).
A new hybrid charge-sensitive preamplifier with a sensitivity of 5 mV/MeV has been specifically designed to operate in conjunction with high-capacitance silicon detectors. The shape of the leading ...edge of its impulse response remains fast (20 ns) and unchanged over the full output voltage range (7 V), as is required in nuclear-physics experiments in which pulse-shape analysis is used for particle identification. The circuit is miniaturized onto two sides of a ceramic substrate as small as 17/spl times/23 mm/sup 2/. A low-noise fast discharge technique is used: the return to the high-value feedback resistor (R/sub F/) comes from a noninverting low-gain (A) amplifier cascaded to the principal charge-amplifier loop. This yields a reduction of the fall time of a factor A, with no changes of C/sub F/ and R/sub F/ and no added noise. The shorter fall time reduces the pileup effects in presence of high event rates. Special care has been devoted to the matching between the high capacitance of the detector and that of the input stage of the preamplifier. To match a high capacitance, four BF862 field-effect transistors have been connected in parallel.
