The interaction of BiFeO3 and Co-doped BiFeO3 thin-film surfaces with water vapor is examined using photoelectron spectroscopy. Water exposure results in an upward shift of the Fermi energy, which is ...limited by the reduction of Bi and Fe in undoped BiFeO3 and by the reduction of Co in oxidized Co-doped BiFeO3. The results highlight the importance of surface potential changes induced by the interaction of solid surfaces with water and the ability of photoelectron spectroscopy to quantitatively determine electrochemical reduction potentials and defect energy levels.
Abstract Background Biobanks increasingly presume long-term storage of biomaterials and data that shall be used for future research projects which are today unspecified. Appropriate consent documents ...for sample donors must therefore explain the breadth of consent and other elements of the biobank governance framework. Recent reviews demonstrated high variability in what issues these documents mention or not and how the issues are explained. This might undermine the protection of sample donors, complicate networked biobank research, create research waste and impact on public trust. Methods A systematic analysis of international research guidelines and existing broad consent templates was performed. Based on this information an interdisciplinary expert group from the AKMEK (Permanent Working Party of German RECs) developed a draft template and organized a comprehensive stakeholder consultation. After revision the final template was consented by all 53 German RECs. Results This paper briefly explores the spectrum of potentially relevant issues for broad consent forms. It then elaborates the template and how it was designed to be applicable in different types of biobanks. Discussion To further improve the validity and applicability of broad consent forms in biobank and other big data research, practice evaluations are needed. We hope that in this regard the presented template supports the development of new consent forms as well as the evaluation and revision of existing ones.
The Co–Cu–Fe phase equilibria are calculated by means of the cluster variation method (CVM) in the temperature range 800–1000°C. For this purpose, the available experimental work on the ternary ...system Co–Cu–Fe, as well as on the three binary limiting systems, is reviewed. The interaction parameters involved in the thermodynamic model are fitted with a selected set of experimental data. The binary Fe–Cu, Cu–Co and Fe–Co diagrams are calculated and compared with the experimental ones. Several isothermal sections of the ternary system Co–Cu–Fe are calculated and compared with the experimental information. The evolution of the compositions of the three-phase equilibria with temperature is investigated in the ternary system.
The phase transformations of Ti-5Al-2Sn-4Zr-4Mo-2Cr-1Fe (β-CEZ) have been studied during continuous cooling after β-solution treatment. For this purpose, electrical resistivity measurements and ...metallographical examinations have been carried out, and the continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagram of β-CEZ alloy has been plotted. The different kinds of β-phase decomposition schemes in β-CEZ alloy during continuous cooling have been investigated in detail. Two main morphological features of the α/β structure are involved, depending on the cooling rate: the basket-weave and the colony structures are observed for high and low cooling rates, respectively. For the intermediate cooling rates, the two morphologies coexist. Finally, a generalized scheme of the β → β + α transformation sequences during continuous cooling is presented.
High beech regeneration density is a concern in northern shade tolerant hardwood forests. High densities of beech (Fagus grandifolia Ehrh) regeneration can crowd out other desirable species, such as ...sugar maple (Acer saccharum Marsh.), and jeopardize long-term sustainability since beech is under threat from beech bark disease (Cryptococcus fagisuga/Neonectria spp. Complex). We examined the efficacy of three tending (no tending, brush saw, and basal bark herbicide) and two timing and harvesting (deferred 5 years post-single tree selection harvest, concurrent with uniform shelterwood harvest) treatments on reducing beech regeneration density and promoting sugar maple regeneration density over 6 years. Six years after tending we found that large beech regeneration density was reduced, medium beech regeneration density had recovered to pre-tending levels in most treatments, and small beech regeneration density remained unaffected. Tending treatments had no effect on any size class of sugar maple regeneration density but the uniform shelterwood harvest promoted medium sugar maple density more than the single-tree selection harvest. Despite this increase, in all treatment combinations sugar maple regeneration densities remained below stocking targets. Our results suggest that while tending treatments can temporarily reduce beech regeneration densities, sugar maple is unable to take advantage of the increased growing space.
The surgical therapy of Graves' disease is favored in Germany, which is an iodine-deficient area, and nodular transformation is common. The surgical methods mainly differ in their extent of ...resection. We examined 152 patients with regard to operative and postoperative complications in a prospective randomized study. Patients were randomized to two groups: treated either by subtotal resection on both sides (STT) or subtotal resection with contralateral hemithyroidectomy (SHT), the two most common surgical procedures. The follow-up period was 6 years; complication and recurrence rates were studied. There was no significant difference concerning mortality, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy, hypocalcemia, secondary hemorrhage, wound infections, or recurrence rate between STT and SHT. However, SHT only requires a unilateral resection in case of a recurrence, thus reducing the risk of bilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy.
