ABSTRACT
Future observations with next-generation radio telescopes will help us to understand the presence and evolution of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters through determination of the so-called ...rotation measure (RM). In this work, we applied the RM synthesis technique to synthetic first phase Square Kilometre Array mid frequency element (i.e. the SKA1-MID) radio images of a pair of merging galaxy clusters, measured between 950 and 1750 MHz with a resolution of 10 arcsec and thermal noise of 0.1μJy beam−1. The results of our RM synthesis analysis are compared with the simulation input parameters. We study two cases: one with radio haloes at the cluster centres and another without. We found that the information obtained with RM synthesis is in general agreement with the input information; however, some discrepancies are present. We characterize them in this work, with the final goal of determining the potential impact of SKA1-MID on the study of cluster magnetic fields.

Radio relics are sites of electron (re)acceleration in merging galaxy clusters but the mechanism of acceleration and the topology of the magnetic field in and near relics are yet to be ...understood. We are carrying out an observational campaign on double relic galaxy clusters starting with RXC J1314.4−2515. With Jansky Very Large Array multiconfiguration observations in the frequency range 1–4 GHz, we perform both spectral and polarization analyses, using the rotation measure (RM) synthesis technique. We use archival XMM–Newton observations to constrain the properties of the shocked region. We discover a possible connection between the activity of a radio galaxy and the emission of the eastern radio relic. In the northern elongated arc of the western radio relic, we detect polarized emission with an average polarization fraction of 31 % at 3 GHz and we derive the Mach number of the underlying X-ray shock. Our observations reveal low levels of fractional polarization and Faraday-complex structures in the southern region of the relic, which point to the presence of thermal gas and filamentary magnetic field morphology inside the radio emitting volume. We measured largely different RM dispersion from the two relics. Finally, we use cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulations to constrain the magnetic field, viewing angle, and to derive the acceleration efficiency of the shock. We find that the polarization properties of RXC J1314.4−2515 are consistent with a radio relic observed at 70° with respect to the line of sight and that the efficient re-acceleration of fossil electrons has taken place.
Previous studies have shown that CIZA J2242.8+5301 (the ‘Sausage’ cluster, z = 0.192) is a massive merging galaxy cluster that hosts a radio halo and multiple relics. In this paper, we present deep, ...high-fidelity, low-frequency images made with the LOw-Frequency Array (LOFAR) between 115.5 and 179 MHz. These images, with a noise of 140 μJy beam^− 1 and a resolution of θ_beam = 7.3 arcsec × 5.3 arcsec, are an order of magnitude more sensitive and five times higher resolution than previous low-frequency images of this cluster. We combined the LOFAR data with the existing Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) (153, 323, 608 MHz) and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) (1.2, 1.4, 1.7, 2.3 GHz) data to study the spectral properties of the radio emission from the cluster. Assuming diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), we found Mach numbers of $$\mathcal {M}_{n}=2.7{}_{-0.3}^{+0.6}$$ and $$\mathcal {M}_{s}=1.9_{-0.2}^{+0.3}$$ for the northern and southern shocks. The derived Mach number for the northern shock requires an acceleration efficiency of several percent to accelerate electrons from the thermal pool, which is challenging for DSA. Using the radio data, we characterized the eastern relic as a shock wave propagating outwards with a Mach number of $$\mathcal {M}_{e}=2.4_{-0.3}^{+0.5}$$, which is in agreement with $$\mathcal {M}_{e}^{X}=2.5{}_{-0.2}^{+0.6}$$ that we derived from Suzaku data. The eastern shock is likely to be associated with the major cluster merger. The radio halo was measured with a flux of 346 ± 64 mJy at 145 MHz. Across the halo, we observed a spectral index that remains approximately constant ($$\alpha ^{\text{145 MHz-2.3 GHz}}_{\rm {across \sim 1\ Mpc}^2}=-1.01\pm 0.10$$) after the steepening in the post-shock region of the northern relic. This suggests a generation of post-shock turbulence that re-energies aged electrons.
Context.
Radio relics are megaparsec-sized synchrotron sources located in the outskirts of some merging galaxy clusters. Binary-merging systems with a favorable orientation may host two almost ...symmetric relics, named double radio relics.
Aims.
Double radio relics are seen preferentially edge-on and, thus, constitute a privileged sample for statistical studies. Their polarization and Faraday rotation properties give direct access to the relics’ origin and magnetic fields.
Methods.
In this paper, we present a polarization and rotation measure (RM) synthesis study of four clusters hosting double radio relics, namely 8C 0212+703, Abell 3365, and PLCK G287.0+32.9; previously missing polarization studies; and ZwCl 2341+0000, for which conflicting results have been reported. We used 1–2 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array observations. We also provide an updated compilation of known double radio relics with important observed quantities. We studied their polarization and Faraday rotation properties at 1.4 GHz and we searched for correlations between fractional polarization and physical resolution, the distance from the cluster center, and the shock Mach number.
Results.
The weak correlations found between these quantities are well reproduced by state-of-the-art magneto-hydrodynamical simulations of radio relics, confirming that merger shock waves propagate in a turbulent medium with tangled magnetic fields. Both external and internal Faraday depolarization should play a fundamental role in determining the polarization properties of radio relics at 1.4 GHz. Although the number of double radio relics with RM information is still low, their Faraday rotation properties (i.e., rest-frame RM and RM dispersion below 40 rad m
−2
and non-Gaussian RM distribution) can be explained in the scenario in which shock waves with Mach numbers larger than 2.5 propagate along the plane of the sky and compress the turbulent intra-cluster medium.
ABSTRACT
Abell 3266 is a massive and complex merging galaxy cluster that exhibits significant substructure. We present new, highly sensitive radio continuum observations of Abell 3266 performed with ...the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (0.8–1.1 GHz) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (1.1–3.1 GHz). These deep observations provide new insights into recently reported diffuse non-thermal phenomena associated with the intracluster medium, including a ‘wrong-way’ relic, a fossil plasma source, and an as-yet unclassified central diffuse ridge, which we reveal comprises the brightest part of a large-scale radio halo detected here for the first time. The ‘wrong-way’ relic is highly atypical of its kind: it exhibits many classical signatures of a shock-related radio relic, while at the same time exhibiting strong spectral steepening. While radio relics are generally consistent with a quasi-stationary shock scenario, the ‘wrong-way’ relic is not. We study the spectral properties of the fossil plasma source; it exhibits an ultrasteep and highly curved radio spectrum, indicating an extremely aged electron population. The larger scale radio halo fills much of the cluster centre, and presents a strong connection between the thermal and non-thermal components of the intracluster medium, along with evidence of substructure. Whether the central diffuse ridge is simply a brighter component of the halo, or a mini-halo, remains an open question. Finally, we study the morphological and spectral properties of the multiple complex radio galaxies in this cluster in unprecedented detail, tracing their evolutionary history.
Aims. The goal of this work is to investigate the Faraday rotation measure (RM) of radio galaxies in hot galaxy clusters in order to establish a possible connection between the magnetic field ...strength and the gas temperature of the intracluster medium. Methods. We performed Very Large Array observations at 3.6 cm and 6 cm of two radio galaxies located in A401 and Ophiuchus, a radio galaxy in A2142, and a radio galaxy located in the background of A2065. All these galaxy clusters are characterized by high temperatures. Results. We obtained detailed RM images at an angular resolution of 3′′ for most of the observed radio galaxies. The RM images are patchy and reveal fine substructures of a few kpc in size. Under the assumption that the radio galaxies themselves have no effect on the measured RMs, these structures indicate that the intracluster magnetic fields fluctuate down to such small scales. These new data are compared with RM information present in the literature for cooler galaxy clusters. For a fixed projected distance from the cluster center, clusters with higher temperature show a higher dispersion of the RM distributions (σRM), mostly because of the higher gas density in these clusters. Although the previously known relation between the clusters X-ray surface brightness (SX) at the radio galaxy location and σRM is confirmed, a possible connection between the σRM − SX relation and the cluster temperature, if present, is very weak. Therefore, in view of the current data, it is impossible to establish a strict link between the magnetic field strength and the gas temperature of the intracluster medium.
Context. Clusters of galaxies are known to be turbulent environments, whether they are merging systems where turbulence is injected via the conversion of gravitational potential energy into the ...intracluster medium (ICM), or whether they are relaxed systems in which small-scale core sloshing is occurring within the potential well. In many such systems, diffuse radio sources associated with the ICM are found: radio haloes and mini-haloes. Aims. Abell 2142 is a rich cluster undergoing an extreme episode of core sloshing, which has given rise to four cold fronts and a complex multi-component radio halo. Recent work revealed that there are three primary components to the halo that spans a distance of up to around 2.4 Mpc. The underlying physics of particle acceleration on these scales is poorly explored, and requires high-quality multi-frequency data with which to perform precision spectral investigation. We aim to perform such an investigation. Methods. We used new deep MeerKAT L -band (1283 MHz) observations in conjunction with LOFAR HBA (143 MHz) data as well as X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Chandra to study the spectrum of the halo and the connection between the thermal and non-thermal components of the ICM. Results. We confirm the presence of the third halo component, detecting it for the first time at 1283 MHz and confirming its ultra-steep spectrum nature, as we recovered an integrated spectrum of α H3, total = −1.68 ± 0.10. All halo components follow power-law spectra with increasingly steep spectra moving towards the cluster outskirts. We profiled the halo in three directions, finding evidence of asymmetry and spectral steepening along an axis perpendicular to the main axis of the cluster. Our investigation of the thermal non-thermal connection shows sub-linear correlations that are steeper at 1283 MHz than 143 MHz, and we find evidence of different connections in different components of the halo. In particular, we find both a moderate anti-correlation (H1, the core) and positive correlation (H2, the ridge) between the radio spectral index and X-ray temperature. Conclusions. Our results are broadly consistent with an interpretation of turbulent (re-)acceleration following an historic minor cluster merger scenario in which we must invoke some inhomogeneities. However, the anti-correlation between the radio spectral index and X-ray temperature in the cluster core is more challenging to explain; the presence of three cold fronts and a generally lower temperature may provide the foundations of an explanation, but detailed modelling is required to study this further.
Context.
Megaparsec-scale radio sources in the form of halos and relics are often detected in dynamically disturbed galaxy clusters. Although they are associated with merger-induced turbulence and ...shocks, respectively, their formation is not fully understood.
Aims.
We aim to identify the mechanisms responsible for particle acceleration and magnetic field amplification in the halo and relics of the galaxy cluster ClG 0217+70.
Methods.
We observed ClG 0217+70 with LOFAR at 141 MHz and with VLA at 1.5 GHz, and we combined these observations with VLA 1.4 GHz archival data to study the morphological and spectral properties of the diffuse sources. We added
Chandra
archival data to examine the thermal and non-thermal properties of the halo.
Results.
Our LOFAR and VLA data confirm the presence of a giant radio halo in the cluster centre and multiple relics in the outskirts. The radio and X-ray emission from the halo are correlated, implying a tight relation between the thermal and non-thermal components. The diffuse radio structure in the south-east, with a projected size of 3.5 Mpc, is the most extended radio relic detected to date. The spectral index across the relic width steepens towards the cluster centre, suggesting electron ageing in the post-shock regions. The shock Mach numbers for the relics derived from the spectral index map range between 2.0 and 3.2. However, the integrated spectral indices lead to increasingly high Mach numbers for the relics farther from the cluster centre. This discrepancy could be because the relation between injection and integrated spectra does not hold for distant shocks, suggesting that the cooling time for the radio-emitting electrons is longer than the crossing time of the shocks. The variations in the surface brightness of the relics and the low Mach numbers imply that the radio-emitting electrons are re-accelerated from fossil plasma that could originate in active galactic nuclei.
We present LOFAR 120 - 168 MHz images of the merging galaxy cluster Abell 1240 that hosts double radio relics. In combination with the GMRT 595-629 MHz and VLA 2- 4 GHz data, we characterised the ...spectral and polarimetric properties of the radio emission. The spectral indices for the relics steepen from their outer edges towards the cluster centre and the electric field vectors are approximately perpendicular to the major axes of the relics. The results are consistent with the picture that these relics trace large-scale shocks propagating outwards during the merger. Assuming diffusive shock acceleration (DSA), we obtain shock Mach numbers of M = 2.4 and 2.3 for the northern and southern shocks, respectively. For M ≲ 3 shocks, a pre-existing population of mildly relativistic electrons is required to explain the brightness of the relics due to the high (> 10 per cent) particle acceleration efficiency required. However, for M ≳ 4 shocks the required efficiency is ≥ 1% and ≥ 0.5%, respectively, which is low enough for shock acceleration directly from the thermal pool. We used the fractional polarization to constrain the viewing angle to > 53±3° and > 39±5° for the northern and southern shocks, respectively. We found no evidence for diffuse emission in the cluster central region. If the halo spans the entire region between the relics (~ 1.8 Mpc) our upper limit on the power is P1.4 GHz = (1.4 ± 0.6) × 1023 W Hz-1 which is approximately equal to the anticipated flux from a cluster of this mass. However, if the halo is smaller than this, our constraints on the power imply that the halo is underluminous
Diffuse radio emission in the form of radio haloes and relics has been found in a number of merging galaxy clusters. These structures indicate that shock and turbulence associated with the merger ...accelerate electrons to relativistic energies. We report the discovery of a radio relic + radio halo system in PSZ1 G108.18-11.53 (z = 0.335). This cluster hosts the second most powerful double radio relic system ever discovered. We observed PSZ1 G108.18-11.53 with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope and the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. We obtained radio maps at 147, 323, 607 and 1380 MHz. We also observed the cluster with the Keck telescope, obtaining the spectroscopic redshift for 42 cluster members. From the injection index, we obtained the Mach number of the shocks generating the two radio relics. For the southern shock, we found
$\mathcal {M}= 2.33^{+0.19}_{-0.26}$
, while the northern shock Mach number goes from
$\mathcal {M}= 2.20^{+0.07}_{-0.14}$
in the north part down to
$\mathcal {M}= 2.00^{+0.03}_{-0.08}$
in the southern region. If the relation between the injection index and the Mach number predicted by diffusive shock acceleration theory holds, this is the first observational evidence for a gradient in the Mach number along a galaxy cluster merger shock.
