The results of a detailed study of the structure of the sound field of a subsonic turbulent jet are presented. The experimental data obtained by the azimuthal decomposition technique and numerical ...data obtained by large eddy simulation are used for the analysis. Two approaches for modeling the noise sources are compared: the “small-scale” turbulence model and the instability-wave model. It is shown that the model of “small-scale” turbulence makes it possible to reproduce the nontrivial radiation directivity characteristics of azimuthal modes in a wide range of parameters and, apparently, is more appropriate for the physics of noise-generation processes in subsonic jets.
Instability waves developing in the mixing layer of a turbulent jet are in many cases sources of noise generation (high-speed jets, jets near an aircraft wing, etc.). This study experimentally ...investigates the possibility of active control of instability waves in an unexcited subsonic turbulent jet. The feedback control system consists of near-field microphones providing the reference signal, a plasma actuator based on a high-frequency dielectric barrier discharge, and a data processing module. It is shown that, depending on the system settings, pressure perturbations in the near field of a turbulent jet associated with axisymmetric instability waves can be weakened or enhanced in a predefined narrow frequency band.

A qualitative model of the mechanism of intensification of jet noise issuing from a nozzle located near a wing is proposed. A two-dimensional model problem on the diffraction of a plane acoustic wave ...at the edge of a nozzle nozzle located near a half-plane simulating the wing edge is formulated. It is shown that diffraction on the wing edge of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability waves developing from the edge of the nozzle can lead to the significant intensification of the acoustic energy radiated into the far field.

The possibility of controlling instability waves in the mixing layer of a subsonic unexcited jet is studied. These waves can be noise sources in both free jets and jets as parts of configurations. In ...the study the method of experimental diagnostics of the instability waves in the near field of a jet using an azimuthal multimicrophone array is realized. The data on the near field fluctuations are used for testing the control strategy proposed by the authors. The strategy consists in narrowband sliding filtration of the original signal and the formation of a narrowband controlling action on the basis of the linear principle of signal superposition. The results of the study represent the next step toward the realization of an active control system suppressing natural instability waves in turbulent jets.
Abstract A high statistics data sample of the decays of $$K^+$$ K+ mesons to three charged particles was accumulated by the OKA experiment in 2012 and 2013. This allowed to select a clean sample of ...about 450 events with $$K^{+}\rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{+}\gamma $$ K+→π+π-π+γ decays with the energy of the photon in the kaon rest frame greater than 30 MeV. The measured branching fraction of the $$K^{+}\rightarrow \pi ^{+}\pi ^{-}\pi ^{+}\gamma $$ K+→π+π-π+γ , with $$E_{\gamma }^{*} > 30\ \hbox {MeV}$$ Eγ∗>30MeV is equal to $$(0.71 \pm 0.05) \times 10^{-5}$$ (0.71±0.05)×10-5 . The measured differential branching fraction over photon energy is compared with the prediction of the chiral perturbation theory to $${\mathcal {O}}(p^{4})$$ O(p4) . A search for an up-down asymmetry of the photon with respect to the hadronic system decay plane is also performed.
