The search for coherent elastic neutrino nucleus scattering (CEνNS) using reactor antineutrinos represents a formidable experimental challenge, recently boosted by the observation of such a process ...at the Dresden-II reactor site using a germanium detector. This observation relies on an unexpected enhancement at low energies of the measured quenching factor with respect to the theoretical Lindhard model prediction, which implies an extra observable ionization signal produced after the nuclear recoil. A possible explanation for this additional contribution could be provided by the so-called Migdal effect, which however has never been observed. Here, we study in detail the impact of the Migdal contribution to the standard CEνNS signal calculated with the Lindhard quenching factor, finding that the former is completely negligible for observed energies below ∼0.3keV where the signal is detectable, and thus unable to provide any contribution to CEνNS searches in this energy regime. To this purpose, we compare different formalisms used to describe the Migdal effect that intriguingly show a perfect agreement, making our findings robust.
Liquid argon is a bright scintillator with potent particle identification properties, making it an attractive target for direct-detection dark matter searches. The DarkSide-50 dark matter search here ...reports the first WIMP search results obtained using a target of low-radioactivity argon. DarkSide-50 is a dark matter detector, using a two-phase liquid argon time projection chamber, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The underground argon is shown to contain super(39) Ar at a level reduced by a factor (1.4+ or -0.2)x10 super(3) relative to atmospheric argon. We report a background-free null result from (2616+ or -43)kgd of data, accumulated over 70.9 live days. When combined with our previous search using an atmospheric argon, the 90% C.L. upper limit on the WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross section, based on zero events found in the WIMP search regions, is 2.0x10 super(-44)cm super(2)(8.6x10-44cm super(2), 8.0x10 super(-43)cm super(2)) for a WIMP mass of 100GeV/c super(2)(1TeV/c super(2), 10TeV/c super(2)).
An improved liquid water absorption model is developed for frequencies between 0.5 and 500 GHz. The empirical coefficients for this model were retrieved from a dataset that consists of both ...laboratory observations of the permittivity of liquid water (primarily at temperatures above 0 degree C) and field observations collected by microwave radiometers in three separate locations with observations at temperatures as low as -32 degree C. An optimal estimation framework is used to retrieve the model's coefficients. This framework shows that there is high information content in the observations for seven of the nine model coefficients, but that the uncertainties in all of the coefficients result in less than 15% uncertainty in the liquid water absorption coefficient for all temperatures between -32 degree and 0 degree C and frequencies between 23 and 225 GHz. Furthermore, this model is more consistent with both the laboratory and field observations over all frequencies and temperatures than other popular absorption models.
We present an updated analysis of the coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering data of the COHERENT experiment, taking into account the new quenching factor published recently in Phys. Rev. D ...100, 033003 (2019). Through a fit of the COHERENT time-integrated energy spectrum, we show that the new quenching factor leads to a better determination of the average rms radius of the neutron distributions of Cs133 and I127, while in combination with the atomic parity violation (APV) experimental results, it allows us to determine a data-driven APV measurement of the low-energy weak mixing angle in very good agreement with the Standard Model prediction. We also find a 3.7σ evidence of the suppression of coherence due to the nuclear structure. Neutrino properties are better constrained by considering the COHERENT time-dependent spectral data, that allow us to improve the bounds on the neutrino charge radii and magnetic moments. We also present for the first time constraints on the neutrino charges obtained with coherent neutrino-nucleus elastic scattering data. In particular, we obtain the first laboratory constraints on the diagonal charge of νμ and the νμ−ντ transition charge.
DEAP-3600 is a single-phase liquid argon detector aiming to directly detect weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), located at SNOLAB (Sudbury, Canada). After analyzing data taken during the ...first year of operation, a null result was used to place an upper bound on the WIMP-nucleon, spin-independent, isoscalar cross section. This study reinterprets this result within a nonrelativistic effective field theory framework and further examines how various possible substructures in the local dark matter halo may affect these constraints. Such substructures are hinted at by kinematic structures in the local stellar distribution observed by the Gaia satellite and other recent astronomical surveys. These include the Gaia Sausage (or Enceladus), as well as a number of distinct streams identified in recent studies. Limits are presented for the coupling strength of the effective contact interaction operators O1, O3, O5, O8, and O11, considering isoscalar, isovector, and xenonphobic scenarios, as well as the specific operators corresponding to millicharge, magnetic dipole, electric dipole, and anapole interactions. The effects of halo substructures on each of these operators are explored as well, showing that the O5 and O8 operators are particularly sensitive to the velocity distribution, even at dark matter masses above 100 GeV / c2.
The objective of the study was to quantify the loss and arterial blood concentration of the three main classes of amino acids (AAs)—nonessential amino acids (NEAAs), essential amino acids (EAAs), and ...branched-chain amino acids—as resulting from high-efficiency hemodialysis (HED) and hemodiafiltration (HDF). We moreover aimed to identify the different fates and metabolic effects manifested in patients undergoing hemodialysis and the consequences on body composition and influence of nutritional decline into protein energy wasting.
Identical dialysis monitors, membranes, and dialysate/infusate were used to ensure consistency. Ten patients were recruited and randomized to receive treatment with on-line modern HED and HDF. Arterial plasma concentrations of individual AAs were compared in healthy volunteers and patients undergoing hemodialysis, and AA levels outflowing from the dialyzer were evaluated. Baseline AA plasma levels of patients undergoing hemodialysis were compared with findings obtained 1 year later.
A severe loss of AA with HED/HDF was confirmed: a marked loss of total AAs (5 g/session) was detected, corresponding to more than 65% of all AAs. With regard to individual AAs, glutamine displayed a consistent increase (+150%), whereas all other AAs decreased after 12 months of HD/HDF. Only a few AAs, such as proline, cysteine, and histidine maintained normal levels. The most severe metabolic consequences may result from losses of EAAs such as valine, leucine, and histidine and from NEAAs including proline, cysteine, and glutamic acid eliciting the onset of hypercatabolism threatening muscle mass loss.
Dialysis losses, together with the effect of chronic uremia, resulted in a reduction of fundamental EAAs and NEAAs, which progressively led our patients after 12 months to a deterioration of lean mass toward sarcopenia. Therefore, the reintroduction of a correctly balanced AA supplementation in patients undergoing HD to prevent or halt decline of hypercatabolism into cachexia is recommended.
Ground-based observations from two different radiometers are used to evaluate commonly used microwave/millimeter-wave propagation models at 150 GHz. This frequency has strong sensitivity to changes ...in precipitable water vapor (PWV) and cloud liquid water. The observations were collected near Hesselbach, Germany, as part of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program's support of the General Observing Period and the Convective and Orographic Precipitation Study. The observations from the two radiometers agree well with each other, with a slope of 0.993 and a mean bias of 0.12 K. The observations demonstrate that the relative sensitivity of the different absorption models to PWV in clear-sky conditions at 150 GHz is significant and that four models differ significantly from the observed brightness temperature. These models were modified to get agreement with the 150-GHz observations, where the PWV ranged from 0.35 to 2.88 cm. The models were modified by adjusting the strength of the foreign- and self-broadened water vapor continuum coefficients, where the magnitude was model dependent. In all cases, the adjustment to the two components of the water vapor continuum was in opposite directions (i.e., increasing the contribution from the foreign-broadened component while decreasing contribution from the self-broadened component or vice versa). While the original models had significant disagreements relative to each other, the resulting modified models show much better agreement relative to each other throughout the microwave spectrum. The modified models were evaluated using independent observations at 31.4 GHz.
