The DEAP-3600 detector searches for the scintillation signal from dark matter particles scattering on a 3.3 tonne liquid argon target. The largest background comes from

Ar
beta decays and is ...suppressed using pulse-shape discrimination (PSD). We use two types of PSD estimator: the prompt-fraction, which considers the fraction of the scintillation signal in a narrow and a wide time window around the event peak, and the log-likelihood-ratio, which compares the observed photon arrival times to a signal and a background model. We furthermore use two algorithms to determine the number of photons detected at a given time: (1) simply dividing the charge of each PMT pulse by the mean single-photoelectron charge, and (2) a likelihood analysis that considers the probability to detect a certain number of photons at a given time, based on a model for the scintillation pulse shape and for afterpulsing in the light detectors. The prompt-fraction performs approximately as well as the log-likelihood-ratio PSD algorithm if the photon detection times are not biased by detector effects. We explain this result using a model for the information carried by scintillation photons as a function of the time when they are detected.
Proportional electroluminescence (EL) in noble gases is used in two-phase detectors for dark matter searches to record (in the gas phase) the ionization signal induced by particle scattering in the ...liquid phase. The “standard” EL mechanism is considered to be due to noble gas excimer emission in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). In addition, there are two alternative mechanisms, producing light in the visible and near infrared (NIR) ranges. The first is due to bremsstrahlung of electrons scattered on neutral atoms (“neutral bremsstrahlung”, NBrS). The second, responsible for electron avalanche scintillation in the NIR at higher electric fields, is due to transitions between excited atomic states. In this work, we have for the first time demonstrated two alternative techniques of the optical readout of two-phase argon detectors, in the visible and NIR range, using a silicon photomultiplier matrix and electroluminescence due to either neutral bremsstrahlung or avalanche scintillation. The amplitude yield and position resolution were measured for these readout techniques, which allowed to assess the detection threshold for electron and nuclear recoils in two-phase argon detectors for dark matter searches. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first practical application of the NBrS effect in detection science.
We present a novel approach for the search of dark matter in the DarkSide-50 experiment, relying on Bayesian Networks. This method incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood ...function, explicitly maintaining the connection with the quantity of interest. No assumptions about the linearity of the problem or the shape of the probability distribution functions are required, and there is no need to morph signal and background spectra as a function of nuisance parameters. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to calculate the posterior probability. A clever description of the detector response model in terms of parametric matrices allows us to study the impact of systematic variations of any parameter on the final results. Our approach not only provides the desired information on the parameter of interest, but also potential constraints on the response model. Our results are consistent with recent published analyses and further refine the parameters of the detector response model.
Next generation direct dark matter detectors will have the sensitivity to detect neutrinos from several sources, among which atmospheric and diffuse supernova neutrinos, through the Standard Model ...reaction of Coherent Elastic Neutrino Scattering on nucleus. This reaction represents an irreducible background that can be expressed as a limit in the Weakly Interacting Massive Particles parameters plane. This limit is known as the "neutrino floor" and it has been obtained by other authors considering standard hypotheses for the neutrino-nucleus form factor and for the coherence of the scattering process. Since the coherent scattering has never been observed experimentally, it is licit to relax some hypotheses in the differential cross section and to evaluate the effect of such modifications on the neutrino floor prediction. In this contribution, we show a more accurate neutrino-nucleus form factor and we discuss the coherence hypothesis of the process in two extreme cases, namely the total coherence and the total decoherence regime. We derive the neutrino background event rate under these new assumptions, considering xenon as a target. The differences between the number of neutrino events and the implication for the next generation dark matter detectors, such as XENON1T/XENONnT, LZ and DARWIN, are discussed.
The Aria cryogenic distillation plant, located in Sardinia, Italy, is a key component of the DarkSide-20k experimental program for WIMP dark matter searches at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran ...Sasso, Italy. Aria is designed to purify the argon, extracted from underground wells in Colorado, USA, and used as the DarkSide-20k target material, to detector-grade quality. In this paper, we report the first measurement of argon isotopic separation by distillation with the 26 m tall Aria prototype. We discuss the measurement of the operating parameters of the column and the observation of the simultaneous separation of the three stable argon isotopes:

. We also provide a detailed comparison of the experimental results with commercial process simulation software. This measurement of isotopic separation of argon is a significant achievement for the project, building on the success of the initial demonstration of isotopic separation of nitrogen using the same equipment in 2019.

In-situ measurement of viscosity advances the field of rheology, and aides the development of sensing systems for condition and performance monitoring of lubricated mechanisms. Many lubricated mechanisms, such as journal bearings or seals, are characterised by three-layer interfaces; an oil separating two solid (usually metallic) bodies. The viscoelastic study of the lubricating oil in layered systems is possible in-situ by means of ultrasonic reflection (Schirru et al. (2015)). General solutions exist for the reflection of longitudinal plane waves from multi-layered solid-fluid systems. Similar solutions can be applied to plane shear waves. The use of a quarter-wavelength intermediate matching layer improves the sensitivity of the ultrasonic measurement and overcomes problems of acoustic mismatch. This opens the possibility of using reflectance methods to measure engineering (metal-oil) bearing applications that are acoustically mismatched. In this paper, a rigorous mathematical model for wave propagation in a three-layer system is solved for the reflection coefficient modulus and validated using a quarter wavelength ultrasonic viscometer. The model was tested against experimental data for two Newtonian reference fluids, water and hexadecane, and for one non-Newtonian reference fluid, squalene plus polyisoprene (SQL + PIP), measured ultrasonically at frequencies between 5 and 15 MHz. The results are in agreement with the expected viscosity values for the reference fluids. Further, the viscosity measurement is not limited to the resonance frequency, but it is performed over a broad band frequency range. This is important to improve measurement confidence and accurate spectroscopy measurement for the determination of viscoelastic properties.

The detector performance reported here meets the requirements needed to achieve the principal scientific goals of the ReD experiment in the search for a directional effect due to columnar recombination. A phenomenological parameterisation of the recombination probability in LAr is presented and employed for modeling the dependence of scintillation quenching and charge yield on the drift field for electron recoils between 50–500 keV and fields up to 1000 V/cm.
Abstract
This paper presents a process-oriented evaluation of precipitating stratocumulus and its transition to cumulus in version 1 of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SMv1) using ...comprehensive case-study observations from a field campaign of the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program (ARM). The E3SMv1 single-column model (SCM) of the marine boundary layer and its low clouds and precipitation are compared to observations including subcloud drizzle retrievals from a combination of Doppler radar and lidar backscatter measurements. The SCM is also compared to a large-eddy simulation (LES) of the same case. The combination of advanced remote sensing observations and LES is a powerful framework to evaluate the physical parameterizations of large-scale models. Given the observed large-scale environment, the E3SMv1 SCM realistically represents the evolution of clouds and boundary layer structure during the stratocumulus-to-cumulus transition. The model well simulates the liquid water path and its diurnal cycle in the stratocumulus period as well as the two-layer vertical thermodynamic structure and lower cloud fraction in the transition period. E3SMv1’s success in simulating the cloud in the stratocumulus period permitted examination of its precipitation processes. Here problems were identified with E3SMv1 producing an unrealistically small subcloud precipitation fraction, an unrealistic double peak in the vertical profiles of precipitation mass, and drizzle that evaporates too close to the surface. Further model diagnostics determined that these unrealistic characteristics resulted from an overly long microphysics time step and an unrealistic parameterization of the precipitation fraction. These results imply that careful consideration of these issues is needed in order to better simulate precipitation processes in marine stratocumulus.
